I hadn't planned on double dipping even if there was anything special about the BD release, but it appears to be just a port of the HD-DVD version.  All of the same exact special features.  With Bay so adamant of how much better BD was I figured he would do something special with this, but I guess not.

-edit-
I take it back, the HD-DVD release had Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 audio track. So the TrueHD and PCM audio tracks are an improvement.  But not really that significant, at least in what I was anticipating they would do.

From Bill Hunt's "My Two Cents" column...

Quote:
Here's the biggie: Paramount and DreamWorks have officially confirmed that Michael Bay's 2-disc Transformers: Special Edition is coming to Blu-ray Disc on 9/2. It looks as though the set will include nearly everything that was on the HD-DVD version (including the Heads-up Display option), along with BD-Live features to be announced. All the video extras will be in full HD. Get this... audio will be available in Dolby Digital 5.1, Dolby Digital Plus 5.1, Dolby TrueHD 5.1 AND Uncompressed PCM 5.1. Again, we're told that the film itself also has a new video encode, optimized for Blu-ray, supervised by Bay himself. Nice. We'll post more details and artwork as they come in from the studio.

By the way, Paramount and DreamWorks have also set Madagascar and Shrek the Third for Blu-ray release on 9/16. Again, we'll post more details as they come in.

Interesting.  I hope somebody does a video quality comparison between the 2 versions.  I mean HD is dead and it's pretty much a moot point, but I'd just be curious to see if there's a noticable difference.

Yes, I'd be interested to see that too.

I mean, if it looks the same, does that make Bay look like an idiot? or, more of an idiot given how you personally feel about him? (Not you, specifically Vega, but everyone reading.)

I own the HD-DVD Version and I will not buy the Blu Ray Version. I saw a few Dolby Digital Plus Titles recently and honestly I can't tell the difference to Dolby True HD. And yes, I do have all the necessary equipment!

I don't anticipate replacing any of my currently owned (60 or so) HD-DVD titles with their Blu-ray counterparts when released. I can't think of any compelling reason to do so.

It's official!

Quote:
Because of Blu-ray's expanded capacity, we are able to elevate the bit rate used for the picture as well as present uncompressed audio in the form of Dolby True HD.

So, it is definately not a port of the HD DVD encode as many had been specdulating.

Interesting.  I wonder if the differences will be noticeable under normal viewing (not paused and zoomed in)?  Either way, it will be interesting to see how they compare.

I'll probably buy it just so that I can tell people that there is no difference.

Maybe Paramount is re-encoding most of their titles.  Lossless audio AND a great video presentation is what I was fighting for from the beginning.  It's great to see that being realized!
