Hi,

I have a suggestion for an additional "Title" field, for releases where neither the DVD Title or Original Title are in English. I have quite a few foreign releases, where the title is not easy to recognise in the Collection list...

One example is the French relase of "The Name of the Rose" which has DVD Title "Le nom de la rose" and Original Title "Der Name der Rose".
Ok, that was an easy one, but try remembering that "Mies vailla menneisyyttä" is the Finnish DVD title for Kaurismaki's "The Man Who Wasn't There".

The extra field could be the "International English Title" for the film and be contributable, or a "Local Title" for users in non-english speaking countries that want to add a title in their language... Or perhaps we could have both?

One minor correction: "Mies vailla menneisyyttä" = "The Man Without a Past".

"The Man Who Wasn't There" is a different movie.

@Tony: I second this request. Someone will probably say that we are profiling more than enough data already, but I would actually like to have 4 different title-fields as you suggested in the last paragraph of your original message. Three of the fields could be contributable, but the one for "local title" could not for obvious reasons - that would have to be a local feature.

For example, I would like to have these fields for this French release DVD of Wim Wenders' & Michelangelo Antionioni-movie in my collection:

Title: Par-delà les nuages (contributable)
Original Title: Al di là delle nuvole (contributable)
English Title: Beyond the Clouds (contributable)
Local (Finnish) Title: Pilvien takana (not contributable)

What I end up doing in cases like this is change the title in my local and locking the title field to prevent it changing back to the original.

Good point, Astra. Your comment leads me to a thought, are these additional fields really useful from a Contribution POV or are they more of local level type of thing? as Mika noted

Mika was not referring to the local database, but to the title within the Locality where the DVD is released.

It is indeed useful fields, as Mika's example shows.

haven't you mixed up the titles?
Original Title: Beyound the Clouds?

Well, I guess we come to the question then, which one here is the original title. According to IMDb this was premiered (public premiere) first in Italy, and apparently with title "Al di la delle nuvole", and that is the reason I regard that title to be the original. However, this might be one of those movies, that received more than one "original" title on step 1. The production companies seem to come from Italy, USA, Germany and France among others...

I'd say they are quite useful and welcome addition of information, but not all that necessary of course. Very often movies, such as the one in my example, are best known universally by their Engilsh titles. I wouldn't mind at all if both of the "extra" title fields suggested were local and not contributable, but I can't see any harm in the "English title"-field being part of the main database.

Especially these smaller budget / not that wide known movies would benefit this added info IMO. I can think of another example in my collection (German release):

Title: Wahnsinnig Verliebt (contributable)
Original Title: A la folie... pas du tout (contributable)
English Title: He Loves Me... He Loves Me Not (contributable)
Local (Finnish) Title: Rakastaa, ei rakasta (not contributable)

... and there surely are many more.

Why do you want to have the English title in the profile of the German release of this French film?

I can see up to three titles in a profile. Those would be cover title, credits title, and original title though.

I explained my reasoning in my previous message. As I mentioned, that field is not crucial for me either, but valuable added information. For example, it would be useful with online collections, if we had the possibility to show English title-fields there. It would be easier to share our collections with people over language barriers. They would recognise the movies better by watching the list - sometimes, probably not often, people only know the international (and their local, of course) title for a movie, not so much the original title let alone the title of the release as in my examples.

A do understand your reasoning better now, thanks. On the other hand the international title of that movie, which I would use to communicate with people of a different language, would be "A la folie... pas du tout" IMO. I was totally unaware of the English title until I have seen it in this thread.

Maybe an international title field would be helpful after all. But I would defitely not name it English title. For example the international title of an Asian film could be the romanised original title in some cases (and in other cases it actually would be the English title of course).
