At the moment we're able to use three name fields in DVD Profiler, however there are/always have been a lot of discussions/confusions about which name goes where, so I like to know how many of you would like to have a single or only two name fields. If you would like things to stay the way they are you can vote option 3 or if you don't care either way you can vote "I'm Neutral".

voted "Neutral" cos I don't really care about Cast and Crew.

The 3 fields are broken by design in my opinion, because we have them 'to sort for last names' but we are not allowed to parse the names of, say, asian actor in a fashion that their last names really wind up in the last names field.

Second choice would have been "Single field" to avoid all the hassle, and a substring search for any part of the name would work just as well on it.

I'll not take a position. But I have always tried to explain my thought process in the setup, it REALLY is no more difficult than you or anyone else choose to make it, it was designed to be easy for EVERYONE and it is.

You are absolutely correct. But that's why I came to change my mind on Asian names and would just enter them in the same order as they are written regardless of the ideal parsing (in this special case).

Single name field, if only to see an end to the neverending threads about parsing...

I voted First, Middle and Last ... the way it is.

We just need to learn to use the tool the way it was meant to be used.

Um... none of the above. I'd like to see Given Name, Family Name.

If the point of the poll is to ask only how many fields we think we should have, then my answer is 2.

Fly that would be in direct violation and cause a major restructure of the database. The program is built around fim credits, not arcane names, IMDb has done that and they are a total wreck.

Skip, in direct violation of what?

The only difference TheFly is asking for is a compbined First/Middle Name field. If that needs a restructuring of the entire database, then any of the solutions other than "3 fields" needs that. But that is not the point of this poll, really.

I described it, Achim. the database is built around Actual film credits, not some mystical definitions of Given name (which will be wrong at least as often as it is right), family name etc., what actually appears On Screen. It would require bioth the complete restructuring of the database and thbe trashing of thousands of man-hors of work.

I am sorry Skip.  I usually do a better job of ignoring your 'skipos' but this one made me laugh.  Oh those poor 'man-hors'.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

Yes, the intention of my poll is exactly that. My second option in fact suggests to merge the first and middle names, not to throw all the existing information in the middle away, and after that the remaining fields should be renamed to the names you mentioned and some database name entries need to be corrected.
