| Posted: | | | | Well I'm feeling in the mood for a rant....... Well DVD's have been around for more than a year or two now (as have widescreen TV's) so you'd think the studios were well past the point of pushing out crappy DVD transfers. In the last few months I have unwittingly (well, ok - it was my fault for not checking) bought 3 DVD's that were either 4:3 or letterboxed (non-anamorphic) widescreen transfers. The 3 offending items are Muriels Wedding (4:3), The Arrival (4:3) and I Know What You Did Last Summer (non-anamorphic) -- all Region 2. Yeah, I should have checked the back of the box - it's not like the information wasn't there. It's just that these days I've come to expect anamorphic transfers as a matter of course. I'll probably end up buying all 3 films again when they are re-released as 'Special Editiions'. More fool me, I guess Ok, rant over..... Andrew |

| Posted: | | | | I rarely believe what the cover says. It frequently doesn't bare any resemblance to what's on the dvd. It still shocks me to this day, how inaccurate they are. Surely the idiots actually check the content of the dvd against the cover. But obviously not. I've even written to a couple of studio's about this. Never got a reply so they obviously don't give a crap either. Personally, I'd fire anyone who made a more than 3 mistakes on dvd covers.
I've had ones that say 'widescreen' (typically therefore non-anamorphic), which are anamorphic. I've had ones listed as 'anamorphic' which aren't.
And don't get me started on audio. | | | Home of the phpDVDProfiler forums |

it still seems there is a demand for crappy dvds in America by some who don't understand wide-screen formats and Studios wanting to save money etc etc. | | | Paul |

Andrew An excellent rant! Nothing ticks me off more than when I mistakenly get a 4:3 movie in amongst my purchases. Yeah, I know I should be more careful but dammit, I just plain miss it now and then - I give them to my kids or my wife... they could care less! Maybe its me..... Ok, rant over..... Andrew The beauty of Invelos is the ability to check and then store in the wish list the Titles We want to buy when the time comes by or the titles show up in the markdown bin.. and you know that with our export voting system you will get more valuable information than what Amazon has to claim in their websites.., or what the artwork says it contains.. The information for each title in the database is the best it can be for truth. There are many times when I think of a title that I don't own,, I then check the availability of these titles within Invelos Itself.. There might be maybe three editions available. By checking the 'release dates' the dates maybe i.e. 1997 2001 and say 2005 .. You can almost guarantee the 2005 release with be all the things we want in a DVD., (anamorphic widescreen,, better brighter picture and sound and maybe a few extra features,..) That Is THE title to add and download back to your Library base.. Use the priority buttons to mark it as top priority.. BY seeing that artwork on regular basis at the top of charts in your wish list will bear on your subconscious when you are browsing the bins.. Use Invelos daily and nurture and develop your hobby consistently.. In other words get the most out of your $29 bucks !! No more excuses for buying the wrong edition anymore .. | | | In the 60's, People took Acid to make the world Weird. Now the World is weird and People take Prozac to make it Normal.

Andrew Good lord, man, everyone of these titles are YEARS old ( and I do mean YEARS we are talking 8-10 years ago) and have not yet been re-released. Now why did you buy them...because the price was righ...you got all of them cheaply. So you have no reason to rant. The fact that you got them cheaply might indicate two possibilities (1) the titles are OOP and once gone they are gone...for now at least or (2) drastic priice reductions are also a common way to clear the shelves in preparation for a new release. Apparently not. One new example is the german release in this week of Zabriskie Point in 4:3. |

Skip Well, I did admit that the mistake was mine for not checking the technical details. And the reason I bought them was 'cos I wanted them as, in my opinion, they are oldies but goodies. It's not necessarily so that old films are bad transfers just as it's not the case that not all new releases are great transfers. So I was sloppy in not checking. My point was I kinda assumed, wrongly, that we were past the point of having to check for these things. I admit it But maybe the studios are being sloppy too -- none of those titles were out of print as was suggested. Anyway, I've learned to be more cautious from now on. Yeah, but since (as Skip pointed out) these DVDs (not the movies) are old releases and haven't bee re-released since they first came out 8ish years ago, you still have to check just like you did when those exact releases came out back then. I know it's not easy to know release dates for all movies out there, just pointing out that the passage of time won't automatically make old releases better. | Posted: | | | | Not OROGINALLY and i thinlk that was the marked down release for the same UPC#. If it was re-releaed in some other form then it would have a NEW UPC. Nice try. In point of fact, that version of Muriels' Wedding was released in 2003, with an anamorphic presentation of 1.85 :1, it was re-released via markdown in 2006. But neither of those were the ORIGINAL release for Muriel's Wedding and would not likely be the one he picked up.

| Posted: | | | | What are you on about? Muriel's Wedding has never had a widescreen release in R2 UK. In fact, out of the whole of R2 only the Netherlands have had a widescreen release so far. So to re-release a full-frame DVD in 2006 is shockingly bad form in my opinion. |
