What exactly is the definition of a 'classic' movie? | | | Don't confuse while the film is playing with when the film is played. [Ken Cole, DVD Profiler Architect] |

It's impossible. For some people an eighties movie can be a classic or for others a classic is a movie made in the fifties.. All depend of the person age I think. This is the same for the adult genre who is highly sugestive too, but I understand why it's include in DVDP (parental control) and that's another story |

| Posted: | | | | For that matter we could argue about the makeup of many genres. We have one user who tried argue ST IV was a Comedy, it has comedic elements, but above Science-Fiction/Action/Adventure. What is a drama.?<shrugs> This is why the Rules read as they do, bbbb Genre Genres are often a matter of personal interpretation, which can differ among users. If your personal preference for Genre differs from the main database, you can store the information you prefer in your local database and lock the Genre field from further updates. Do not make contributions that only change or re-order Genres, unless the existing Genre list is blatantly incorrect. What is YOUR definition of Classic? Skip | | | ASSUME NOTHING!!!!!! The genre Classic is to demote merit upon the film itself., What maybe a classic to others and not yourself is not for you and I to judge but the merits of the film itself.. | | | In the 60's, People took Acid to make the world Weird. Now the World is weird and People take Prozac to make it Normal.

| Posted: | | | | I agree... it can be said about any of the genres.
With Classics... I have heard some people say classics are from XXXX year and older. Then I have heard others say that classics has nothing to do with how old a movie is... but (basically) the way a movie is made and the impact the film had.
If you go by such a year and older... that line continues to be moved as the year goes by and eventually every movie will be a classic... if you go by the impact the film made... the film does not have the same impact on all people... so you won't see a lot of agreement there either. | | | Pete |

So true. Keeping with peoples' discussion about the arbitrary nature of genres, I find that as soon as something is set in the future, people are determined to label it primarily as sci-fi, even if it is clearly a drama or other appropriate genre (e.g. Red Dwarf is foremost a comedy. The setting is at best secondary, so comedy should come before sci-fi). | | | Adelaide Movie Buffs (info on special screenings, contests, bargains, etc. relevant to Adelaideans... and contests/bargains for other Aussies too!) |

| Posted: | | | | I use "Classic" for my "Silent" titles and remove classic from all other titles. I agree with the others here, "Classic" is NOT a genre and should not be on the list. But, since it is there, I put it to my personal use. | | | Dan |

| Posted: | | | | To me classic movies are movies released before I was born. I think this should be the official definition in the rules:
Movies older than Bob9000
It has a nice ring, don't you think? |

Maybe genre should just a local thing, since so many can feel so different about the same film. For me it's breaks down to horror, intentional comedy, unintentional comedy, porn and other. What do places like libraries use to assign genres, and what's their definitiion of classic? Maybe they should make directors & writers assign a genre when the movie gets the go ahead. Is that the MPAA that tells the trades and websites what genre a movie is before it comes out, or someone at the studio typing up a press kit? Where does it come from? |

It has a nice ring, don't you think? Fair enough. I have only two minor corrections: 1. if I didn't like the movie, it's not a classic anyway; 2. include some great movies released when I was younger (rule 1 applies as well). | | | -- Enry | | | Last edited: by White Pongo, Jr. |
