Hi. I have an issue about the overview printed on the back of the DVD cover. Sometimes they have one or a few spelling errors, others are riddled with poor spelling.
My question goes to how do we contribute this to the online database?
My instinct tells me to correct them, the contribution rules may be against it. (?)

(You`d think a short overview entry on a cover would be spell checked, wouldn`t you?)

For my local database, I do correct any obvious mistakes, but I`d like to know what you think.
Any input?

The rules leave no room for corrections so it's irrelevant what I think. But I'd do as you suggest for my local. (I don't know about Norway, but the Swedish overviews are notoriously bad written...)

as silly as it sounds all overviews must be presented in exactly the same state of text as what is currently on the box. if a word or name is spelt incorrectly- it must be submitted the same way..
Now you can fix and keep your own overview text locally but not submitted.

This is very true... gotta wonder how that passes by all the people involved with the DVD/movie... of course in the county where I live, they built an elementary school, and created a beautiful brick sign out front by the road... and they misspelled elementary...

"Overviews
Overviews should match the back of the DVD case exactly, including capitalization of words exactly as it is shown on the back of the case. If words are highlighted in italic or bold on the case, then identify them with ‘single quotation’ marks.  Exception: If the entire overview uses an uppercase font, enter the overview using standard capitalization rules.

Never include the following items in overviews:

    * Taglines
    * Reviews (unless they are incorporated into the text of the overview on the case)
    * Extra features
    * Hyperlinks or other HTML

For multi-language cases, use only the language of the DVDs locality.

When there is no overview on the case, add a simple, self-written overview of 1-2 paragraphs. Do not include spoilers and always match the overview language to the profile's locality.

For Concert / Music Videos you may include a listing of Song titles and length, if available."

What do the Rules tell you to do, Atle. Do they say ANYTHING about fixing typos? The answer is no, they do not.  Type exactly what you see PERIOD if you wish to Contribute, User typos can be corrected, but not typos generated within the actual overview itself.

People are worried about spelling mistakes?  I've got at least one set (cheapo collection) where the synopsis is for a completely different movie!

My answer in the poll was that you don't correct the spelling error. Not because I find that logic, but because it's in the rules and they are sometimes illogical.

That's why I don't contribute anymore. I want everything correct and logical in my database. I don't like the idea to do everything in double : illogical for the online database and correct for mine.

I remember that discussion, but not the final outcome, if there was any...

AESP:

Have you ever collected anything before? Mistakes are part of it, sometimes mistakes add real VALUE, if the mistake is not captured how do you know about it. For example, in W0m's example he may own one of a few of that film, which escaped before the error was fixed, thui setting his copy apart from everyone else's and conceivably making it more valuable. So, AESP, what seems illlogical to you has a very rational reason for existence and a much better reason than just blindly going around and correcting spelling, then comes grammar and pretty soon the Overview has nothing to do with the case. not to mention the English correcting color to colour, etc. EVERYT Rule depite what YOU might think has its reason.

The last time this came up mathias, the results were resoundingly against surfeur and his idea. But you know this stiff has to be done every few months .

That's why I don't contribute anymore. It's not an attack against the rules, maybe illogical is a strong word. But Skip notice that I've said in my answer that the rules must be follow, I prefer to not contribute since I don't want to make the job two times (for the database and for me).

I own a movie, A Shot in the Dark, 1933 U.K. where the overview proclaims that the actor Edward Van Sloan appears, but he doesn't, he appears in another movie of the same name from 1935, but as rules say 'Overview from cover so the mistake stays. UPC 0825646070527.

DVD Profiler keeps an accurate copy of the overview as it exists on the back cover of the DVD.  It's not about having what you or I may consider accurate.

It is only 'stupid' if you believe the field serves a purpose other than the one Dr. Killpatient mentioned.  In that context, it is perfectly reasonable to include all typos.
