Genres as the program defines it are limited on purpose, to be broad generalizations for the master database.

You are correct - Tags will do exactly what you want... I will attempt to give you some instruction on this...


From the Collection List box, go to the bottom and select the "Set Tags" tab

if you are not currently using tags there, this section will be empty. right click in the window and select "edit tags"

click "add tag..." and enter your first Genre, say Zombies. Then repeat over and over again until all the categories you want are in the window. If you are planning on expanding more then just the horror section, you may want to create tags say "Horror" and "Science Fiction" - and then add zombie, vampires, etc as Child Tags to Horror, and say Robots, Future, etc as Child Tags to Science Fiction.

now you are looking at the "Set Tags" window and all the check boxes are empty. now go back to the tabs at the bottom and return to your "Collection List"... now search for your first movie you want to categorize... highlight that movie, then go back to the set tags window, and check boxes where appropriate. you can choose multiple boxes where applicable say for Van Helsing

repeat these back and forth steps for all movies you want to tag....

once you are done, i would recommend backing up your database, because I know first hand this is hard work...

after that you can now go to the Filters tab located between the Collection and Set Tags, and use the right arrow on top to go to the right, select the Tabs icon over there, and now you can check what tabs you want to filter by... so if you want to bring up only vampire movies, you check vampires, then go back to the collection list tab...

Pretty useful when trying to find something that "might" not be covered by a built-in filter option.

It might prove handy to set some things up as sub-category tags of more wide-reaching areas.  For example, I have a "Creature Feature" category with various subcategories.  It makes the interface easier to navigate (I can collapse that branch), but it also allows me to do a vaguer search more easily.  I think (I'm at work so can't check) I actually have an "Undead" subcategory, which vampires and zombies (probably mummies too) go under.
