Although the credit lookup tools is a useful tool, I have thought of a useful feature to be added to it.

We all know that there are certain actors/actresses whose film credits are in database incorrectly.

For instance example: Don Batte (5/43) 2 unique titles (or Don Battee (13/75) 3 unique titles).  Now, my problem is that according to the CLT, we should use Don Battee.  BUT I have visually verified that he is credited as Don Bette in 2 of the 3 titles the CLT lists him in.  Therefore the CLT is incorrect and only user updates will fix that.

Eventually there will come a time (hopefully) when the CLT will automatically correct itself by user updates, but could this correcting be transposed over to the database automatically??

I suppose that if we "normalized" the database and made the cast & crew listings global and all other info by locality then this would be fixed then too.

Comments??
Peter

The CLT does automatically correct itself by user updates.

Maybe I didn't explain clearly.  I realize that every time that contributions are made that the resulting crew & cast info gets uploaded into the CLT.

What would be useful (and also promote a more accurate database) is that if eventually if actor "A" who is credited as John//Smith early in his career (say 7 dvds) and then starts getting credited as John/Q./Smith at some point.  Up until the number of dvds crediting him with John/Q./Smith reaches 8 we would have to use John//Smith [Credited as: John/Q./Smith] as per the rules.  What I would like to see happen is when our buddy John Q. Smith reaches 8 dvds that the CLT suddenly says "OK, John/Q./Smith is now the most common name!  Let's update the 7 early dvds to credit him as: John/Q./Smith [Credited as: John//Smith] and update the most recent 8 dvds to credit him as: Jon/Q./Smith [Credited as: ]

This would be quite a bit of work for an actor with a filmography of 15 dvds.  Imagine an actor with significantly more dvds.

BTW, thanks for the quick response Ken.

I started a topic on Terrence Howard, but falcon2099 pointed out he's brought the same issue up, so it's best to be discussed here:

This isn't a topic to dispute recent contributions for credited as for Terrence Howard vs. Terrence Dashon Howard, because according to the credit lookup tool, Terrence Howard has 68 credits to his name and Terrence Dashon Howard has 71. Problem is, what will happen when (not if) Terrence Howard is his most commonly credited name? Only 4 more and that will happen... So, do we have to go back in and switch those around? From what I've seen, all his current movies he's credited as Terrence Howard and I assume this will be the case in the future.

Hmmm.

The first thing that it seems to me that needs to be done is get it right. There is a lot of crossover between the two names with users ignoring the Rules and trying to normalize the database based on their particular bias. For example Hart's war is As Credited TH, but there are a number of listings for TDH. Now if I understand what falcon originally asked and Ken subsequently answered it sounds like if it is set to TH and the count changes in favor of TDH or vice versa, no further change is required on our part, which if that is true is way cool and I like it.

Well, if it does correct itself, that would be nice.

One gripe I see with the credit lookup feature as it is now, is that i counts the same title several times if one of the releases have e.g. Special Edition in the dist trait. This should be easily fixed as the dist traits are fields by themselves and only the title itself needs to be counted. To make it even more precise, it should look at the original title if filled in and if not, it should compare titles in the title field only. Again, should be easy to implement.

Hope you are reading this, Ken
