You can run a HDMI cable for video and an optical cable for audio.  I did that without issue.  The PS3 allows you to select different outputs for both video and audio.

If you screw up the video and can't see anything, turn off the PS3 and then turn it on by pressing the power button but hold down the power button until it shuts itself off.  That'll reset your video.

Ok, I tried to find an optical cable last night but, since I live in the armpit of the south, no go. I'll have to check a local audio store later today.

The "kid" at Wally world tried to help, he really did. But he confused me even more, I have to confess. He was asking me about the connections on the Samsung unit. I told him what I could remember, like the HDMI out, the optical, the component and digital out... He told me I could try a Coaxial Digital Audio cable, which I bought, run that from the DTV DIGITAL AUDIO OUTPUT on the LCD to the back of the HT unit. But when I got home, I couldn't find the corresponding color on the sound system.

So, now what?

The PS3 doesn't have a Coaxial output.  You need an optical cable.

From what you said in your initial post, you were going to use an HDMI cable from your PS3 directly to your TV.

However, if you want to use your receiver for everything and it has componant video and optical audio inputs, yes - you can go that route.  That's what I'm currently doing now.

Check your video configuration on your PS3, it may not be set up to display in 1080 resolution.  If it's not, you'll know it once you set it up to display in 1080, it's hard to miss.  Also make sure your TV can support 1080 - some HD TV's only go up to 720.  If your TV supports 1080, check to see if it supports 1080p or just 1080i.  If it doesn't support 1080p, don't select it or you will get a blank screen.  If you get a blank screen while testing video resolutions, simply wait and the PS3 will reset it back.

Your HTS has an HDMI out?  I thought it didn't thus the need for two cables.  If it has an HDMI in, just use an HDMI cable only, no optical. HDMI cables can carry both high definition audio and video.
