| Posted: | | | | Hello all
I've just upgraded to Vista (my old pc died on me!!) and my version of Power DVD (4) doesn't work anymore - so I've now got no way of determining whether the audio stream on a dvd is in surround or stereo or even morse code!!
I use DVD Decrypter to determine regions and layers - could someone suggest a freeware program that will tell me the audio channels?
Thanks

On my receiver it shows what channels are active, so it's easy to distingush between stereo and surround. I understand that some may not have recievers which show what speakers are on with any given audio track, and some users may be using the TV speakers without a surroiund system at all. |

If you've already got it open for analyzing time & regions, it's convenient. Hint: find & select the main feature object when in IFO mode, then look under the Stream Processing tab. caveat: that doesn't tell you about the presence of a mono signal encoded as 2/0, or matrixed surround unless the flag in IFO is properly set, which is rare, and even then only applies to DPL - not the EX/ES flavors. (sometimes the DPL flag is set in the audio stream, but not in the IFO - in which case VOBedit can be used to examine the stream packets, but an appropriate receiver in autosense mode is a lot easier for these. ) Does DVD Audio Extractor give information on matrixed formats? I couldn't tell from a quick look at their features & screenshots... | | | Last edited: by Cyclograph |

Older versions of PowerDVD did differentiate between 2.0 stereo and surround. For some reason they changed that later on. However, you can still see the differences in newer versions of PowerDVD, but you have to directly open the DVD's VBO files to actually see stereo/surround "flags" now... | | | Corey |

| Posted: | | | | Thanks for the replies. I don't own a receiver and my speaker system/dvd don't give detailed information. As Katatonia stated Power DVD XP DID display 'Surround' where it applied - but later versions don't. I think I'm going have to put up with not being able to determine surround sound - and leave that to other people (which will make a nice change... ) |
