Why does the invelos database add a birth year to certain actors when contributing new data? Does this only occur when there are more than one actor in the database with the same name? If not, then why doesn't it come up all the time?

I was entering another disc id for UPC 027616853981 (Never Say Never Again) and, under Cast, Sean Connery's birth year 1930 came up but requested further documentation.

Max von Sydow also came up with the change Max Von Sydow but did not request further information.

Thank you in advance for help in clarifying this for me.

If you contribute an actor with a birth year that has already been accepted into the database, the contribution system will not ask. If the birth year is an addition that is not in the online db, then you get the check box and reminder that it needs documentation. I am not aware of any other Sean Connery, so a birth year would not be needed for him, unless there is another one.

The von v.s. Von shows up as a change, but your local db can have only one variant. At least as far as I recall.

Hope that helps.

I've noticed this too., I add one little item, and when I go to submit I find I have actors names misspelled differently, and birth years in place that were never there in my original data..

This is a problem caused by the fact that the program cannot deal with Upper and Lower case. It does not recognize that there is a difference between Von and von. Yet filmmakers will sometimes credit Von and sometimes von, same is true for many other names DiGiloramo/Digiloramo. The only way we can deal with it at this time is through the alias system, to be able to correctly display how the person is credited for THIS particular film.

The birth years can come from an external update to headshots.  If you added headshots from that database that's running around, a number of profiles added unnecessary birth years.  I know the guys have been trying to clean that up.  If Invelos tells you that a BY is not recognized when you submit, it's a good clue that you should dump it...at least for purposes of submitting to the online.
