In short the market seems to been flooded with cheap fake USB memory sticks. The controler of the chip hads been manipulated to let it operate as it has the mentioned capacity on the stick but it has only 1/4 of the memory on board. A 4 GB stick let you write 4 GB without fault messages. When you want to retrieve your data it seems to be there but is corrupt. They'll then get their money back.. According to your description that seems to work in Canada. Here in Germany it doesn't work. On the IT news your read on a regular basis about trouble with PayPal/eBay. But in this case the USB sticks were sold through regular electronic shops. | | | Karsten

In a local shop I bought a 1GB MP3 player (not cheap then), but I could only save 512MB on it, everything else just disappeared. |
