| Posted: | | | | Jan de Bont immigrated from the Netherlands to the US and lives in LA. Die Hard credits: Director of Photography JAN De BONT Speed: Director JAN De BONT In his movies he uses the credit JAN De BONT and not JAN de BONT. So how would we credit his common name Jan de Bont or as his choice Jan De Bont? http://www.ailf.org/awards/ca2001/jdebont.html | | | Sources for one or more of the changes and/or additions were not submitted. | Posted: | | | | Well, his REAL name is Jan de Bont - in the Dutch language we never ever capitalize articles in names.
However, if you're actually going to check credits, you'll find he is credited with quite a number of name variants. He's credited as Jan de Bont in 'Who's That Girl' and 'Lethal Weapon 3', as Jan De Bont in 'Die Hard' and 'Speed', as Jan Debont in 'Ruthless People' and as Jan DeBont in 'The Jewel of the Nile'.
With such an abundance of different name variants, I have personally chosen his REAL name (Jan de Bont) as common name - at least for now... The fact that he's indeed credited as such in a number of high profile movies like 'Lethal Weapon 3' and 'Who's That Girl' confirms my suspicions. | | | Last edited: by T!M |

No he's credited as JAN De BONT | | | Sources for one or more of the changes and/or additions were not submitted. | Posted: | | | | You're right, I was confused with another title. Sorry! I've edited my previous post removing this false claim. | | | Last edited: by T!M |

In any case, I bet if we're purely looking at his number of different credits, I think the correct Dutch capitalized format 'Jan de Bont' will win out - simply because quite a large number of early credits on Dutch productions, like 'Blue Movie', 'Turks Fruit', 'Keetje Tippel', 'Max Havelaar', 'De Vierde Man' and many, many more Dutch films made between 1965 and 1980 on which he was the cinematographer. | | | Last edited: by T!M |
