| Posted: | | | | I have had a dvd I done from scratch because its not on the database, it got rejected twice, first time for not stating where I got the cast and crew details from and then rejected cause I used IMDB for cast/crew details, the dvd for features on the discs and a UK site to get the release date why are people so damn strict on stuff? I didn't know the release date so I use a site that states dvd release dates in the uk.............. this site I just dont get why things are so damn strict, the profile I submited was as accurate to the dvd as possible why should it matter where I get information from as long as I state where in the notes when submitting? | | | http://www.invelos.com/dvdcollection.aspx/andybno1 | | | Last edited: by andybno1 |

| Posted: | | | | As for the cast and crew, they can't come from IMDB since they own their database and to use it as a source for our own DB would be breaking a copyright law. Besides, they lack accuracy like no-one's business. As for the release date and whatnot, well, if you can't fully confirm details, the field should be left blank. Long story short, all data must have been independently gathered and verified. |

| Posted: | | | | There is only one valid source for cast and crew, and that is the Film's credits. Just pop in the DVD, get out your pen and paper, and start writing. It might seem like a lot of work, but it's easy when you get the hang of it, and the result is very satisfying... | | | Berak

| Posted: | | | | Andy I see this is your first post here but you have already contributed a couple of titles and got them accepted. I don't know if they were from scratch but if they were then you know what a lot of hard work they are. So we are lucky that so many people take the time to do this. The fact is the only really accurate way to get cast and crew is from the credits at the (usually) end of the DVD. This does take ages but I promise you do it a few times and you'll find out how often IMDB can be out. Probably not enough for most peoples purposes but others here like it spot on. having already entered it from IMDB there is no need to delete everything nothing stopping you watching the credits with what you have and confirming each entry changing only any that differ. This then becomes your data and your source is the credits how you do it is up to you. As for release dates then I think you can look at a couple of the retail sites for the dates if you can't find it on a distributors site as that is often the case most would think that was a reasonable source of data. The contribution rules are a good place to start (eg IMDB is verbotten) and do make most of this clear but can be a bit daunting at first. If you have any queries then I have found the majority here to be helpful, but please don't let one rejection put you off, clearly you have at least one DVD that no one else has and I imagine within your collection several that need updating. Every time I enter a new DVD I am always grateful if it is already in the database, so thanks for trying to contribute and I for one hope you try again since you may have a title I have and it will save me having to do it |

Actually this is what I do as well, but I print a copy of the profile from IMDb (aaargh ) first, and use that as a base when scanning through the credits, correcting and rearranging as I go along. As a side bonus this has given me first-hand knowledge as to the incorrectness of IMDb data, and that is why we should only use that as a base (if at all). | | | Berak

This, unfortunately, is not true. If you got the cast and crew for IMDb, it is not accurate to the dvd...it is accurate to IMDb. In addition, as Nadja pointed out, copying the data from IMDb is a violation of their ToS. If invelos allowed this into their db, they open themselves up to legal action. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. | Posted: | | | | I'd like to point out the most important thing to me: It is not necessary to fill in each and every data to a profile. If you can't afford the time to collect the cast and crew from credits - or anything else in the profile - then leave it blank. There will be someone - maybe you a month or two later - who will complete your work. Things used to be a lot less strict. One of the problems that led to was that the same profiles kept being submitted over and over and over and over and so on. One person wanted things to look one way and someone else wanted them to look different. So they would just keep resubmitting hoping to win the war. At times the rules can seem too strict. But it has really cut down on the constant contributions. It can be tough at first, but once you learn the system, it's really not all that bad. You've already mastered the first step in fact. What would be worse than to be sued for copying info that's horribly incorrect anyway? Yikes! I always open the movie in powerdvd in one window and have profiler next to it in another (except when credits are small, then I have to overlap to be able to read) and type the info in while pausing the dvd. Works great and saves paper/ink/lead. If a member of cast or crew isn't on your list already, add them. For bigger names you only have to type in a couple letters from first and last name and they will show on the narrowed list, making it that much quicker and easier. | | | Last edited: by bigdaddyhorse |

But don't you hate it when the credits are in some font that's nearly illegible (is it an "I" or an "L"?) or it's faint lettering on a dark background or the source material is so bad that all the text is fuzzy or (and this is my favorite) there is a cut in the film so some of the credits are missing? | | | Another Ken (not Ken Cole) Badges? I am working on one like that, "Dickens of London" the roles are grwat, but thr actors are in script with scrnes playing in the back ground. I have to step framr by frame to get a good pivture of the name. I can only do one episode a night. And most of the actors are not in the db. amazon.com usually has the release date, deepsiacount removes them after the release date. | | | We don't need stinkin' IMDB's errors, we make our own.
