| Posted: | | | | I know this may not be a tachnical question, but is there anywhere (or anyone) that I can download an extensive collection of high quality headshots to go with each actor in my collection? I don't really want to go through millions and millions of actor profiles on imdb and grabbing their mugshots for my collection, surely there's an easier way or am I just missing something? There is a tool somewhere here that some use. I will advise you not to use it. Most headshots are copyrighted by somebody, and as such, sharing of them is an instant Copyright violation and subject to the penalties that accompany that violation. the odds are that you won't get caught but...so I play it conservatively and build my headshot library which never leaves my computer.

Skip Ken has pinned that thread so I don't believe this is an issue. In addition, most, if not all, of those pictures were taken from the web and should fall under the 'fair use' act...similar to the way use DVD covers. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. I was just trying to help with an initial search to give a kind of starting point, but i did not verify the data. Att. Jonathan: Another idea to build up your personal headshot database from scratch would be to start with series. Here you can process rather quick by scrolling through the cast and crew. The disadvantage of downloading more or less complete headshot databases is (beside the gray zone of copyrights) that you have many headshots of cast/crew without an appropriate profile (but you can delete those with the database repair utility). Another point is the personal preference of selection and quality of your headshots! | | | Thorsten | | | Last edited: by kahless |

| Posted: | | | | Fair use applies to personal usage, Unicus NOT sharing.. Beyond that I have no idea, I am not a lwyer, I don't play one on TV but I am also not willing to risk it. I don't recall Ken ever making a statement that it wasn't an issue.

Skip ..interesting point! Does the sharing and/or direct import of (copyrighted) picture material has the same quality of importing (copyrighted) cast and crew from " somewhere"? I don't know. Better we don't talk about it. Let sleeping dogs lie! | | | Thorsten | | | Last edited: by kahless |

I also am not a lawyer, but since I have had some bad experiences with those who decide their work is copyrighted, I feel I can chime in here to provide some advice. Many of these headshots were in fact take from IMDB (like it or not, that is the case) and most pictures on that site ARE copyrighted and if you look at the page they were originally posted on, it will tell you who the copyright holder is. As Skip stated, fair use applies to PERSONAL use - not personally shared use. I am not stating that you will get into trouble or even trying to discourage anyone from doing what they want (or are going to do anyway) just make an informed decision when you decide to act. Fair use is thrown around and since the exact terms have gotten muddled up over the years, you are always at the whim of those who think it is not fair use. Just my 2¢ (or in my case $4,850, including legal fees ) |

Just my 2¢ (or in my case $4,850, including legal fees ) Thank you for this deterrent example. We should not underestimate the efforts of ambitious advocates looking for lucrative sources of income! | Posted: | | | | Allow me to expand some more since I DO have some familiarity with Copyright law, even though I am not a lawyer. The Federal penalty for conviction of a Copyright is a fine of up to $250,000 and/or FIVE years imprisonment per violation (count). How this is meted out is a matter for the judge todetermine and depends on the magnitude of the violation. for eample: someone caught with 5,000 illegal copies of films is in BIG trouble, much bigger than say someone caught with ONE. But it doesn't end with the criminal prosecution, all of the copyright holders involved have the right o sue in civil court for recovery of lost income and damages. That is NOT a pretty picture, try getting caught with a bogus library of Disney films, you will never see another nickel the rest of your life. As the old saying goes discretion is the better part of valor. Perhaps some here like to pay craps...I don't. Snake eyes is not a pretty picture Skip | | | ASSUME NOTHING!!!!!! Just my 2¢ (or in my case $4,850, including legal fees ) Not trying to be difficult, and no I am not a lawyer but I have consulted a couple as this applied to several websites I used to run. 'Fair use' does not apply only to personal use. From the U.S. Copyright Office: Section 107 contains a list of the various purposes for which the reproduction of a particular work may be considered “fair,” such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research.Very few of those purposes could be considered 'personal use'. In addition, we scan and share copyrighted cover images every day. How is that any different than sharing headshots? In addition to that, we also transcribe and share overviews. Again, how is that any different? The truth is, it isn't any different. If sharing headshots is a copyright violation, and falls outside of the fair use act, so does sharing cover scans. Does that mean you can't be sued? Of course not. People will sue you if they get a chance, but let's not pretend that sharing headshots is any different than sharing all the other copyrighted data we share. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
