Inspired by this thread, I'd like the idea of having a field where one can say

Made For Theaters
Direct-2-DVD / Direct-2-Video
Television Production

That would also made it possible to remove the TV "genre"

I would be thrilled with something like this as well... of course as long as you can filter on it.

But what do you do with titles that are released theatrically in some countries, but go directly to DVD in others?
This new piece of information would require information about the production of a film, that the average user wouldn't really have access to.
Because of that, I can't really support it.

Sounds interesting, but I would still want to be able to distinguish TV series. And northbloke may have a point...

A DVD profile is a locality thing. I'd expect that the info about release type matches the locality (e.g. Theater in a US profile, Direct-2-DVD in a german profile).

It's no worse than finding out the CoO.

You have my vote for this. I would call it 'original release/performance media/venue'. This should definitely be distinct from genre. To address northbloke's point multiple entries can be allowed and/or the field can be limited to country of origin. Some options include:

'Movie'
'Theater'
'OAV/OVA'
'Television'
'HDTV'
'Live'
'Sport Arena'
'Concert Hall'
'Nature'
'Web'
'Backyard'
'Dungeon'
'Sofa'

OK that's a bit much .

Seriously though I think it would be great to have that information in addition to genre.

On the other hand, we use the original (first) theatrical release date as Production Year,
not the release date in the Locality where the DVD is sold.

But one could argue that it is irrational to use original theatrical release as production year.

What about Robert Rodriguez's debut film 'El Mariachi'? He made it for the direct-to-video market, but as he was shopping it around he found a company that wanted to show it in the theaters.

pdf256, no offense, but just like with the rules there will always be an example that isn't black or white.

But that doesn't mean it wouldn't work for the other 99.x%.

If this were to be enabled, I would say we go by what actually happened, rather than by intent.
El Mariachi had a theatrical release, so we go by that, rather than the fact that it was made for video.
I think the problem is using the term "made for theaters", I think it would be better to use "theatrical release" or something like that.

Or we could eliminate the distinction between for theaters or DVD by just using categories like "Feature Film", "Television", "Short", "Performance", etc.

Just my oppinion on this. I don't tell that it's a good or a bad idea but ...

Is it just another can of worm that we will open if this request is add? Just look at the never ending argument about the "year of production" and the "Country of origin". This is almost the same thing, too many difference from a country to another. Add this request to the personalize section of the DVD is maybe the better solution.
