| Posted: | | | | As part of a "wider update", I added the aspect ratio of 1:33:1 to a full-frame (TV show) profile. The aspect ratio box in the current profile was empty, although the "full frame" box had been checked. I got a no-vote of someone saying that it's "full frame so aspect not required". I do understand that "full frame" essentially is an indication of the 1.33:1 aspect ratio, but still, I don't see reason to leave the aspect ratio box empty, certainly not when 1.33:1 is one of the built-in choices. I've been entering the 1.33:1 aspect ratio for full frame DVD's for years now, and I believe most full frame profiles in the database do. Am I right or wrong? |

| Posted: | | | | They should definitely be entered. In fact, this didn't use to be possible, if the full frame aspect was ticked but no aspect ratio was entered, that ratio couldn't be changed. Ken specifically enabled this, meaning that the aspect ratio is certainly intended to go in conjunction with the full frame checkbox. |

| Posted: | | | | Sure, because the video could be formatted in 1.37:1 (Academy ratio) too and this also appears as full frame on a regular 4:3 TV set. | | | Martin Zuidervliet

| Posted: | | | | It's been my experience that if you don't enter an aspect ration it defaults to ":1" which says nothing and looks silly. But maybe I'm doing something wrong to get that ":1" display. | | | Another Ken (not Ken Cole) Badges? We ain't got no badges. We don't need no badges. I don't have to show you any stinking badges. | Posted: | | | | I planned to add some comments about why I think we should fill in the ratio drop-down, but I think the vote results make it clear enough. | | | Get the CSVExport and Database Query plug-ins here. Create fake parent profiles to organize your collection. |

| Posted: | | | | I have no problem with adding the ratio for full frame DVD's, but it makes me wonder... Do the Widescreen/Full Frame/P&S radio buttons really fulfill any useful function?
If we always enter the ratio, then we already know if it's widescreen or full frame. And in order to accurately state if something is P&S you would have to know the OAR, and as has been pointed out in other threads, it's often very difficult to establish the true OAR.
There are many DVDs out there that are very obviously P&S - and for those DVDs this is a very helpful information - but is it wise to collect information that is not verifiable for all DVDs? Shouldn't it at least be P&S/OAR/Undetermined? | | | My freeware tools for DVD Profiler users. Gunnar |

| Posted: | | | | Gunnar, in my very uneducated about ratios opinion, I think the buttons are needed. Not for the people who know what the ratios mean automatically, but for the people who just know that full frame means that it fills the screen and that widescreen has the black bars (yes, I do know that you lose a lot of the picture with P&S and personally prefer ws). I know that this information is out there and have found it more than once, but I'll be honest. I'd rather spend more time watching the dvd than remember what the ratios stand for...
I know that there are different ratios, but couldn't tell you which numbers mean what. I'd say that most of the silent majority that use the program just want to be able to see at a quick glance what the movie is considered rather than having to figure out what the numbers mean. I could see renaming some of the fields to better suit the numbers, if it's really that big of a problem telling the difference, but wouldn't want to lose that all together. By having both ways, it (hopefully) makes the most people happy. Those that want the actual ratio numbers can have them and those that just want to know the basics have that as well. | | | Lori |

| Posted: | | | | The buttons are needed particularly when there are two presentations of the film on the disc in different aspect ratios. They drive the graphical representations of the screen ratios that are shown when not in edit mode. Also P&S 1.33:1 is an entirely different beast than FF 1.33:1. | | | ...James

Skip Why do you feel the need to post something like this? Seriously, I wonder. I made a contribution, I got a 'no'-vote, I exchanged PM's with that particular user, the suggestion was made to make a forum thread about this, and so I did. Nothing more, nothing less. Yes, I was convinced I was right before I even came here, but my word wasn't enough to convince the other user. This poll was, so our problem is now solved. Do you feel there's anything wrong with this? Should I have handled things differently? If so, I'd sure like to know how, and I'm amazed to see that you're grabbing this opportunity to take another cheap shot at me. Edit: also, I have never EVER claimed poll results equal rules. Better yet: I have often stated the exact opposite. I would appreciate you not spreading lies about me, thank you very much. | | | Last edited: by T!M |

| Posted: | | | | Tim: I don't think a poll was necessary. You have tried to cite polls as if they had some relevancy, Tim, which is the equivalent of trying to turn them into Rule by fiat. As you have seen this turned out to not be a simple Yes or No question. I too, merely wondered, why does Tim feel a need to Poll on every question he has. Skip | | | ASSUME NOTHING!!!!!! I think the ratio should be entered 100% of the time. | | | Hal |
