I must admit I do so enjoy ramming the majority's bad rules back down their throats, it was short-sighted at the time and I tried to explain all of that but as usual if Skip says it then it has to be bad, so live the fallout of your own decision.

I voted neutral because I can't support changes being made to ram anything down elseone else's throats.  I don't believe this was done to improve the database, but to prove a point.  And I won't partake.

When I saw Mark's post above, it led me to wonder if we could use a 4th voting option for "Comments". This would be used if a voter's opinion is that while a contribution is following the rules and therefore not worthy of a 'no' vote, there's still a reason why the voter doesn't wish to support it with a 'yes' vote. This would allow the voter to still provide feedback to Invelos in a way that the neutral vote doesn't currently allow. It also still allows for neutral votes to be used by those who don't want to issue any public opinion on the contribution.

Reasons to give a "Comment" vote could be "the rule doesn't produce a desirable result" or "we need a rule for XYZ", for example. This has come up with titles (possessives, cover vs. on-screen), cast and crew (songwriters/composers), etc.

It could come in handy and might move some 'no' votes into the 'comment' zone while still providing input to Invelos and reduce some of the tension over certain issues . Possibly.

How about a comment field attached to a neutral vote.

If it contains text, it shows up for the rest of us (and the screeners) to see.

If it is left blank, it doesn't show up at all, as today.

I like this option.

I've long wondered why the neutral option didn't have a text field and figured it was because it was hidden.  But I'd like it to have one.

That would work too.

I am not happy about it, James but it is what you wanted and now refuse to follw the Rules with your voting, it is almost laughable were it not so absolutely pathetic. This about as transparent as a piece of glass.

For someone who so quickly and abusively regales anyone who speculates about your motives, Skip, you sure rapidly assign motives to everyone else.

Please stop the hypocrisy. It ill becomes you.

I didn't ask just for myself. I think others might find it useful and Invelos might benefit from the alternate method of feedback. I've not seen anything from Ken or Gerri that indicates that their desire is for us to "live with it" so they might be interested in the extra input. If the community doesn't want it or if Invelos doesn't want it, that's fine. It's just an idea.

My last post on a rules topic was November 7th, nearly two weeks ago.

Do keep in mind that this is a feature request. Discuss the merits of the idea if you like, but there's no need to insult me or impugn my motives.

Let's set the record straight, shall we?  Ken gave us his proposed rule change back in September.  That proposed change included two phrases:

1. Use the title from the front cover.
2. Include possessives if the cover includes them.

It was the second statement that James, and several others, took issue with.  It was changing the second statement that he was "one of the drivers behind."  Please stop saying it was the first as that is completely untrue.

Oh James, I don't ask you to follow me. I follow Ken and his direction, hence the Star Wars change, but you have made it very clear that you are not even willing to follow Ken, even after he gave what you wanted. But the number of discussion we have had that reveal your ant-Rule bent, along with the votes you cast which are quite likely to be in violation of the Rules...but then boy do you spin when you are caught, you spin you twist but you absolutely refuse to acknowledge it. It becomes YOUR interpretation and that interpretation is GOD. Even on something as simple as

"Use the title from the front cover."

BTW I have no pinion on this topic, James, i have a problem with the driving force behind it.

Like I said:
"We want to follow the Rules, as James the arbiter defines them....until we don't. When it becomes inconvenient or we don't like it we will ignore them"
Unfortunately for me but fortunately for the database I do not take this approach nor am I constantly attempting to redfine things to suit me. The Rules are what they are and I follow them and when I make a mistake I correct it, either in Contribution or in vote. I also do not attempt to use the power of the vote to attempt to get a user to do something which he may not wish to do for whatever his reason. I may leave him a comment with a Yes vote, for example add the DVD Distributor, but the bottom line is, if he chooses not to do that then it is up to me or someone, it is NOT right nor ethical for me to Vote NO on such a Contribution simply because he chose not to add the Distributor.

Not only I like to comment my neutral vote, but I also would like the see the number of neutral voters for my contributions. The first helps others, the second helps me.

I often vote Neutral just because I don't actually own the DVD but it's in my Wishlist, or in the "Ordered" section, which BTW I use for comparing different editions/localities.

Not sure what help a neutral vote with no comment would be.

I use neutral votes for things in my wishlist, for changes that I do not have time to validate or for changes that are technically correct per the Rules, but that I do not agree with personally.

Generally I don't see a problem with this but personally I don't think it's necessary because I believe that if a change follows the Rules that you should Vote Yes (whether you agree with the Rule as it stands or not) because it's a legitimate update for those who follow the Rules and therfore for the Central Database (which is what you are voting on; you're not voting on whether you like it or think it works)... this already allows the voter to mention any reservations in the Comment field of the Yes vote for observation by the Screeners
