| Posted: | | | | I am sick and tired of people of not looking before they contribute a profile, especially a new profile. Let's say that you worked a few hours on a profile, just to get it just right, before you submit it, but user ABC123 had already submitted the same profile with the same info a few day eariler, but they included something you didn't. Now when ABC123's profile gets approved your info will change in your local database, unless you locked it, but your profile also gets approved a few days later. Now ABC123's info they included and you didn't will be deleted, which would defeat the purpose. So please stop being lazy and look first before you contribute, it's kinda like, when you were growing up and your mom would tell you look both ways before crossing the street. It just takes 5 minutes to look and everyone will be happy, especially the person who worked hard on the profile. | | | We're on a mission from God.

| Posted: | | | | You don't necessarily have to lock it, you can refuse the update.
As for people not making sure they have the most recent version of a profile, yes, I can agree there.
But on new profiles, there's often no way to know that someone else worked on it, until it's released. |

| Posted: | | | | I have to agree with Patsa here - you're fussing about people who don't look before they contribute but in the same breath you fuss that someone contributed the same profile you contributed but days before you did.
So, are you angry at yourself for being lazy? | | | Last edited: by Dr. Killpatient |

| Posted: | | | | I'm not sure, but I think in his example eagle61397 is "ABC123" and "you" is one of the lazy people. |

I'm not talking about any particular user, I was just talking in general terms. Almost everyweek I see multiple overlapping contributions for the same profile and some of them undo the work of the previous contributor, which defeats the purpose. I can understand that if something is incorrect and the person wants to fix it, that's fine, but IMO I think people should just look online first and then go from there. | | | We're on a mission from God.

| Posted: | | | | The only way to tell if someone else has contributed a new profile is to try and contribute something yourself. This has happened to me a few times with exclusives like 300 from Best Buy. I spent almost an hour building a perfect profile, only to submit and see everything already submitted. Unfortunatly you can't see the new ones before they are released so I couldn't compare and contrast. In that case I went ahead with my submission just in case I had something that was missed by those who beat me to it (beat me to it sounds wrong, it's not a competition. Change it to "those who's subs went in before mine" ). Recently I've just submitted something minor to see if someone else already has done a full profile. If they have, I hit cancel and wait to see the profile and if it needs tweaking. If not, hit cancel and do the profile. It's the only way I can see to do it with new releases that don't have pre-approved partial profiles. | | | Last edited: by bigdaddyhorse |

| Posted: | | | | You have twoi ways too deal with this, check the titles for voting and see IF there i anything up there. The other way and the way I do it, is a quick review of the notes that have been left (this should ALWAYS be done) at the time you Contribute and see what is going on. For example, I see this all too frequently, somebody makes the following change Runtime per back cover, yet a review of the notes and you discover someone else has done Runtime verified per PowerDVD and DVD Decrypter(or whatever tool)...guess what the bozo changing per the cover is...WRONG.
There are ways to cope with this problem, the ONLY time it becomes a factor is when two users are submitting a brand-new release within a short period of time of each other.

Skip This is what I do and then I submit my changes/additions. I also try to mention the other contributor's name, by saying something along the line, this contribution is an addition to the one in progress. | | | We're on a mission from God.

True; that's why I like to enter basic outlines of pre-release titles as soon as I can because this problem tends to arise if there is no pre-release info (especially for popular releases) just after the day of release and having a baseline to work from allows people to use the method above. | | | It is dangerous to be right in matters where established men are wrong |
