One of those things i believed would never happen in this country

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/7082795.stm

An 18 year old boy was posting videos on YouTube, pictures of him with a gun, practice shooting and posted his "manifesto" on another site, mostly consisting of him describing why he hates humanity and he wants to wipeout the human race. Some time later he went to hes school and started shooting people.

For some weird coincidence, a couple days ago near Rome...

A marksman and he only killed one? That doesn't bode well for the Italian army does it .

Humor aside...it always dismays me when I read or hear storys like this. What's happening with our youth? It's frightening .

The Liberals got in everywhere and said "Oh...you mustn't chastise them they are only young, smack them on the wrist, tell them not to do it again, then send them home"

In my day if you did wrong and got caught you received punishment suitable to remind you not to do it again.

Bring back Public Floggin'

Soon stop some of these mischevious lout's if they knew that they'd be up in the local shopping Mall Saturday midday, trousers around the ankles, getting the Birch in front of everybody, I know it would make a few around here think twice about doing anything anti-social.

IMO I think it starts at home. When I was young and if I did something bad, I either got yelled at or a spanking and sent to my room. Now parents are afraid of spanking the kids, because they are afraid of being charged with abuse, which is total BS. Since the kids know they won't get yelled at or spanked, they feel they can do anything.

Just a couple of weeks ago we had a shooting here in Cleveland and they are still trying to figure out what happened. And just yesterday another school was closed here, when the administration found threating notes in two bathrooms. I think we need to go to uniforms, so everyone looks the same.  I went to a relgious school growing up and we wore uniforms and we didn't really seem to mind.
We're on a mission from God.

I don't think that a uniform dress code will help at all. The problem is not that someone wears a pair of Levi's and you don't, the problem lies within the dysfunctional character of the kids commiting these crimes. I'm pretty sure the media will soon "uncover", that the kid in Finland listended to heavy metal music, wore mainly black, played Counterstrike and was an outsider at his school.

It's also not the fault of TV, motion pictures, music, computer games. It's a deficit in the way kids are raised by their parents these days.

As long as the media, self proclaimed conservative guardians of virtues, family members and next of kin and social institutions have the possibility, to put the blame for acts like these not on the current system they are are part of and their own behavior and failures, but on the private activities of the suspects they will continue to take this easy path to avoid responsibility and deciding on necessary changes.

Back in the days of my youth (I'm currently 36 yrs. old) or my parents (they're 67 yrs. old) playtime for kids was a completely different matter than it is today. Back then you played good guys vs. bad guys in the backwoods.

Well, that doesn't work anymore today, because:

1. There aren't enough backwoods in the cities no more
2. If kids manage to find a patch of green to play in, they'll be eaten alive by unleashed or free roaming fighting dogs.
3.If they outrun the dogs, they'll probably cross a toad migration path and get into trouble with the local tree hugger community and are forced to leave the forest to keep nature save.
4. If the stay clear off the toad paths, they'll encounter the local ranger, who calls the police because they made a rodent panic, disturbed a local but now rare bird species building a nest, or kept a deer from reproducing and bringing the new "Bambi" into this world.

And even if the aforementioned (and exaggerated) points do not match, a form of playtime like I remember would cause a call to the FBI and at least statewide media coverage, if any grown up happened to walk by.

Because back then kids were actually bound to a tree for two or three hours and left alone to scream and wail, because they were a cowboy or indian from a rivaling tribe caught by the indians. The rest played on, and without wailing and screaming half the fun of the afternoon would have been lost.

I'd be curious to see what game, music, TV-show, motion picture (take your pick) would be called upon to explain the "terrible torture experiance of a 5-year old in the peaceful green belt of [enter city of prefence here]".

Headlines would probably read similar to "Unsuspecting forest walkers, looking for browsing deer, stumble upon underage torture victim, decorated in satanic symbols (=indian war paint) and tied to a tree. Ritual slaying averted at last second. The supected satanists listened to beastializing music before the deed (= native indian folklore or Country-music, your choice), read violent books (= The Leatherstocking Tales, The Last of the Mohicans), and watched movies containing scenes of extreme torture ("Winnetou 1-3)"

Were those games in the woods cruel? Surely, but no one playing back then took any damage from that. Why? Because the social surroundings back then (family, daycare, school, youth club etc.) were actually able to teach values and educate the kids. They had time for the kids and did not need to make time for them from something presumably more important. These days, parents are quite content to rid themselves of their responsibility for their kids by utilizng the readily available services of TV-sets, DVD-players, VCRs, PCs, Playsations, XBoxs to avoid having to actually spend TIME with their offspring and listen to them, their problems and motivations. Most of the times the parents of kids commiting these crimes claim not to have had ANY idea about what was going on in their kids' heads. How is that possible unless you acively neglect your child for years?

And frankly I don't see a difference between the kids from back then who hit each other over the head with a tree branch and the kids from today wasting each other away on a PC by firing a UZI. But wait, there is one: back in the good old days you received actual physical pain, you hurt, you bled. Maybe we should go back to those days... but no, we're already (or still, depending on where you stand on this) there. Just not as often, and just not as harmless, but instead with nationwide media coverage.

To quote Chris Rock: Why search for a label to put on these kids? Whatever happened to CRAZY?

I read today that he did die...  Probably just as well..

Here's a little something I posted the other day in another forum ( not funny, so I don't like to call it Joke Forum)  ;

school parking lot with shotgun in gun rack.

1957 - Vice principal comes over to look at Jack's shotgun. Principal goes
to his own car and gets out  his shotgun to show Jack.

2007 - School goes into lock down, and FBI is called. Jack is
hauled off to jail and never sees his truck or gun again.
Counselors called  in for traumatized students and teachers.

#2. Scenario: Johnny and Mark get into a fistfight after school.

1957 - Crowd gathers. Mark wins. Johnny and Mark shake hands and
                  end up best friends.

and does not disrupt class again.

Ritalin. Becomes a zombie. School gets extra money from state because
                  Jeffrey has a learning disability.

#4. Scenario: Billy breaks a window in his neighbor's car
and his Dad  gives him a whipping with his belt.

                  and becomes a successful businessman.

Billy's mom has affair with psychologist.

#5. Scenario: Mark gets a headache and takes some aspirin to school.

Speaking of shootings.

We just had a Drive-By not 1 hour ago right outside my office building. Some gang bangers in a gold Honda Accord opened fire at another vehicle driving by our office hitting the vehicle 5 times. A total of 15 shots were fired but no one was injured.

BTW, I work in Salinas, CA which has one of the worst gang problems in Northern California.

I asked our boss if we can get hazardous duty pay now .

I think there's more going on than just bad parenting. Something has gone wrong in society as a whole that's creating problems.

One of the worst examples from the raising of my kids is when I was walking with one of them and holding her hand. She fell. It twisted her arm. I took her to the emergency room. Soon I was separated from her and interrogated because they suspected I was abusing her. When we got home, I had police waiting on my doorstep whereupon I was interrogated again. My kids were frightened. I thought I was going to be arrested.

We recently had an issue at my kid's middle school (12-14 years old) where they asked all of the kids 200 questions about their family life to see if they were being physically or sexually abused. The written questionnaires, with very detailed and graphic questions, were followed by personal interviews for any kid that gave answers that triggered their criteria for follow up.

It's a scary time to be raising a kid, I can tell you that.

The problem is that the young today are over-protected and that no one give them any limit. When I was young and I'm not that old I'm just 37 years old, my father was here to teach me when I cross the line and yes he was strict with me. This is lost now since the parents can't educate their childs without an intervention by the children police. The young today have no respect for nothing, I know that almost every generation said that but it's worst than ever and this is a result of the protect the children from everyone and everything policy.

A child as a natural need to expulse his aggresivity, but now he can't do it since every physical contact is forbidden. When I was young the boys fight each other and that was not the end of the world, they shake hands after and the problem was rule (no one use a gun or a knife). I was in my part of fight and I didn't become an homicidal maniac. I'm just a normal guy who has learn how to deal with the over pressure situation in my life because of the way the education system was in my childhood.
