My contribution notes explaining why I've used Willie Burton as Common Name (slightly edited):

Quote:
His "IMDB name" is Willie D. Burton, but his credits at IMDB almost always say (as Willie Burton). IMDB is, of course, not always trustworthy, but I think they are mostly right when saying he is most often credited as Willie Burton. I own 13 movies with this guy, and in 9 of them he is credited as Willie Burton (The Game, The Goonies, Altered States, Constantine, In the Line of Fire, The Shawshank Redemption, Panic Room, Ghosts of Mars, Lethal Weapon 2). He's only credited as Willie D. Burton in 4 of them (The Entity, Man on Fire, Se7en, The Green Mile). I have verified that he is credited incorrectly 67 TIMES as Willie D. Burton in the online database (using the credit lookup tool) - JUST by checking those credits against the 10 movies I've checked PERSONALLY (the 9 movies I mentioned earlier, plus Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, where he is also credited as Willie Burton - incorrectly contributed in this case, as his credit there is for 2nd unit work). There are probably MANY more incorrect credits as Willie D. Burton.

Don't matter... the rules clearly states to use the Credit Lookup tool they provide to get the common name to use. Will this give us off results till all titles have updated credits per the rules... yes... in some cases... but that just means there is work to be done... and we still need to go by the rules and use the look-up tool they provide.

I chose for Willie D. Burton. In my own collection, he credited more WITH that middle initial than he is without it, so I never even really questioned this before. Also, aside from the sources Martin named, he is also referred to as Willie D. Burton on:

But have you actually checked that the credits in the profiles in your collection are "as credited"? I also thought that Willie D. Burton should be the common name, and started using the "credited as" function for all his Willie Burton credits. However, when I went through the credits of all 14 movies in my collection which listed him as sound crew member, I found 10 actual credits as "Willie Burton" and only 4 credits as "Willie D. Burton". Some of my profiles had him listed incorrectly as Willie D. Burton, when he was actually credited as Willie Burton, and I suspect this is the case in other people's collections as well.

But have you actually checked that the credits in the profiles in your collection are "as credited"? I also thought that Willie D. However, when I went through the credits of all 14 movies in my collection which listed him as sound crew member, I found 10 actual credits as "Willie Burton" and only 4 credits as "Willie D. Yes, I certainly DID verify them! You already found four Willie D. Burton credits; I can add (all personally verified): 'Short Circuit', 'Sneakers', 'Another 48 HRS.', 'Bounce' and 'Wargames'. So now we already have nine Willie D. Burton credits to match those nine Willie Burton credits you found. Even with that tie, I still feel Willie D. Burton, being the most "complete" name variant, would be the preferred "common name".

Edit: I found another one, he's also credited as Willie D. Burton in 'All of Me'. That already makes 10 confirmed/verified Willie D. Burton credits.

Ok, thanks! I seem to be pretty alone in thinking Willie Burton should be used as common name, then, at least judging by the comments in this thread. I will withdraw my contributions, and instead use Willie D. Burton as common name.

Based on the Credit Lookup tool the answer is obvious, Willie D. is it by a landslide. I don't care what anyplace else has to say/. I show him listed as Willi D. roughly twice as much as Willie.

Great bit of research! I'm still sticking with Willie D. Burton, though. We've been through this same debate several times before: the fact of the matter is that for each and every person with a middle initial there are bound to be credits where the middle initial is left out. To me it's not even that important whether the amount of credits WITH the middle initial is 45% or 55%: from the combined research in this thread it is clear that Mr. Burton is often credited with his middle initial. Not just a few times, not just in the beginning of his career, no, he's credited with it many times, thoughout his career. For me, that's enough to make it part of his "common name", regardless of whether we'll be able to find one more Willie Burton credit. He's also listed as such at a large number of resources, including imdb.com, wikipedia.org, allmovie.com and oscars.org. Again: I'm happy to drop the middle initial from someone's name if it's only used a few times throughout his career, but that clearly is not the case here. For me, there are clearly more than enough "Sure Willie D." entries in there.
