Yes, it is a large list

And in my mind, they should of droppped films from th list when they revised it

Otherwise it will just be "some movies we like"

I'd classify a couple on the list as the worst movies I've ever seen.

Yeah, but in the preface to the book, it is mentioned that these movies are in no way the cream of the crop. They are just movies that were either significant in some way, or have a single scene that may have influenced others, etc.

Wow, that was a big list took me forever to read through it.  I would love to know the criterion for picking the films, because the list is not very good.  I noticed number only garnered that spot because it was by date and it was the oldest.  I can honestly say some of these movies are so bad I would put them on the don't waste your time list.  Thanks for posting it, but I don't think it is a good list and just because something influenced pop culture with one scene doesn't mean you need to see the entire film, especially if it was lousy.  Just my 2 cents.

i always thought these sort of things were essentially 'some movies (or whatever) that we like'....

But anyway  i dunno, i adore films and the older i get the more i seem to get out of this uniquely modern art. The list seems to be a potted history of cinema (birth of a nation helping resurge the KKK but is still hugely influential). This to me implies that the author's position (concious or not)  is they know about cinema and are sharing it for the masses...

Personally i prefer texts (programmes books etc) that mention films with a certain aim in mind (rather that this consumerist 'consume these while you can') like The story of film by Mark cousins or Scorsese's Journey through American cinema...
That's the thing about racism, though, most of it is covert.

From Booklist

Film lovers seeking critical guidance more discerning than daily newspaper reviews but less daunting than scholarly journal articles depend on a handful of critics who write about rarefied films for a general audience. 1001 Movies You Must See before You Die puts a user-friendly mask on the serious thought animating its effort to create a roster of indispensable films and rather belies the erudition of its well-qualified contributors. The chosen 1,001 are chronologically listed, from the surreal sf short A Trip to the Moon (1902) to Russian Ark and chicago (both 2002). This list has been compiled with an eye to historical importance and popular acclaim, which explains the presence of such critically suspect crowd-pleasers as Saturday Night Fever, Top Gun, and E.T. Since Chantal Akerman's nearly four-hour Jeanne Dielman and the Czech psychedelic farce Sedmikrasky (Daisies) also appear, it can't, however, be accused of pandering to popular taste. Attractive design, incorporating stills from most chosen titles, makes the volume a browser's delight as well as a useful guide for casual viewers and film buffs alike.

Review

"We at Gotham love, love, love our movies. So when we received 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die…we started taking notes for our next Netflix order. 1001 Movies is a cinephile’s dream: From the silents (The Birth of a Nation) to 1940s film noir (The Maltese Falcon) to the first of the independents (Cassavetes’ Shadows) to 2004’s Oscar-winning Million Dollar Baby, the book gives an extensive history of each film, with most entries accompanied by stills. We found plenty of little-seen gems, too, like Japanese director Kon IchikawaÂs The Burmese Harp from 1956”
