| Posted: | | | | I've just order the new 3 disc edition and I have a question about the way we profile it. The DVD countains two different cuts of the movie, so is it profile as a boxset or is it profile as a regular DVD?
I am late in the game and I don't want to enter something wrong if I'll make some change in the profile.

| Posted: | | | | It all depends on how different you feel the two versions of Caligula are. If you think you can justify them being classified as two different films (like the versions of Brazil or Dawn of the Dead) then go ahead and make it a boxset. If however you feel that one is simply an "extended" or "unrated" version of the other, then it's to be treated as a 3 disc profile. Sorry it's not a definitive answer, but unfortunately there's no clear cut way of dealing with DVDs like this. | | | Last edited: by northbloke |

| Posted: | | | | One factor to make a decision could be different credits. Brazil and Dawn of the Dead do have different credits throughout the various version.
Then again, Dawn of the Dead is currently not handled as a Box Set in the online database, as the parent still has all the information (and I'd assume the credits of the Theatrical Cut); it is a Box Set in my local.
You can always create the child profiles first (recommended) and then watch the votes when changing the parent. If most people prefer one profile, you could just keep the Box Set setting local.
I understand the two versions are rather different, one being an Adult film, the other being an extended cut. But then everyone draws that line differently, as northbloke already said. | | | Achim [諾亞信; Ya-Shin//Nuo], a German in Taiwan. Registered: May 29, 2000 (at InterVocative) |

I definitely got the child profiles from the online database, maybe it's been done as a "TV" boxset to keep both parties happy - which may be an option in this case too. |

There is only one original cut, which is the X-rated version. The R-rated that was the only available for many years is simply the X-rated without the X portions. Adding some extended scenes for an anniversery edition is not, in my opinion, justification for calling it a new version. | | | John

UPC : 014381875720 Thanks for the tip - just ordered myself a copy... Not sure which way I would profile it yet, but it seems there is an 'Alternate pre-release version of the film, never seen before' along with the unrated, uncensored film, so I would guess a box-set is in order? | | | Berak

It's still parked in my Wish List (may order it at the next 20% sale at DDD). But according the review at DVD Talk the "Adult" cut is on Disc 1 and Disc 2 has an extended cut based on the Theatrical version. Actually, they say the film is pretty dreadful in either version yet give it their Recommended rating because of the extras | | | Achim [諾亞信; Ya-Shin//Nuo], a German in Taiwan. To be clear here, there are two versions in the set: 1.) the original X-rated version, with the hardcore inserts; 2.) an alternate pre-release version, which has extended scenes and material that was later deleted. It is not the R-Rated Cut (which only had the hardcore scenes removed). I see no reason why multiple profiles couldn't be created, ala "Dawn of the Dead". |

| Posted: | | | | Thanks guys. So I'll wait for my order to arrive (friday or monday) depends of Amazon and I will check if the cast and crew credits are that much different. The profile seems at this time a regular DVD profile (not a boxset), but maybe the individual disc are profile too.
I already have the unrated version and I see this as the greatest DVD release this year, not for the movie since it is not that great to begin with. But for all the extra :
• Commentary with Actor Malcolm McDowell (a good one as some others people told me) • Commentary with Actress Helen Mirren • Commentary with Onset Writer Ernest Volkman • 12 Deleted and Alternate Scenes • My Roman Holiday with John Steiner • Caligula's Pet: Conversation with Lori Wagner • Tinto Brass: The Orgy of Power (the director before guccione mess all the project) • Vintage Making of Featurette Produced in 1980 • Behind the Scenes Footage
This DVD is the best way to learn more about one of the big movie mess ever ... | | | Last edited: by Jimmy S |

| Posted: | | | | I'm curious - do you know if the extended cut is Tinto Brass's preferred cut or if he's had any involvement with the release? I know he had a big falling out with Guccione when he found out about the hardcore inserts, and up until a few years ago had refused to have anything to do with the film. |

I believe the producers attempted to match Brass' cut, but not all of his footage was available. I have not viewed the feature, "Tinto Brass: The Orgy of Power," yet and I don't know when it was filmed but I don't think he was directly involved with this release. Also, I have been led to believe that Brass' falling out with Guccione had as much to do with toning down the political angle of the film as it did with inserting hardcore footage. In any event, the new version is visually stunning - something akin to a Criterion release. The audio is great, too. Shostakovich and Tchaikovsky never sounded so good in a film. | | | Another Ken (not Ken Cole) Badges? We ain't got no badges. We don't need no badges. I don't have to show you any stinking badges. | Posted: | | | | This cut is an alternate pre-release version without the hardcore insert, unrelease new scene and a different editing. The movie make more sense and it is suppose to be the more close of what the original director want.
Tinto Brass is probably involve in the new release since he talk in great detail about the production in a long interview. This is probably the first time that we have his oppinion on this mess history.
The complete Gore Vidal scenario is also include in the set (not a paperback version, that'll have been to great)
Take note that i've not see this cut yet and what I told you came from another person.
But I could give you more details when I will receive it. |
