| Posted: | | | | Edit: Excuse the typo in the title, it should say Official not Officoal I'm trying to come up with some sort of priority or reliance on what we should be using as sources for names. So rate the above on how well you score it as a source (5=Great, 0=Terrible) and after 72 hours, along with the other similar polls, I'll calculate the average scores to give us a league table of sources. | | | Stuart | | | Last edited: by Gadgeteer |

| Posted: | | | | Depends entirely on what you want it to be reliable FOR. Birth date: I love it. Where they grew up, perfect. Filmography, well now that drops a bit, perhaps they were in an embarassing role early in their career and want to forget it. How about that Thomas F. Wilson discussion that's going on? The official site is wonderful for deciding what he WANTS to be called, but worthless for what his credits actually say... and here the rules say to go by the end. credits. ONLY.
Not to mention, what exactly makes a site "official"? Did the actor create the site with their own two hands? Did some flunky do it? Did a studio do it?
So... you're missing a choice: It all depends. | | | Build a man a fire and you keep him warm for a day. Set a man on fire and you keep him warm the rest of his life. | | | Last edited: by RHFactor |

| Posted: | | | | I agree that there's always a bit of "it depends"; however, I consider a person's official website as definitive unless proven otherwise.
If we're going to rate official sites low on the list of acceptability, we're over-thinking things in my opinion. | | | ...James

I hear what you're saying, James, but the point was that this poll was to try to force one "common name" down our collective throats. Just because Thomas F. Wilson calls himself by the nickname "Tom" on his website doesn't mean that it is the most commonly credited name for him in the Invelos database. It just means he likes being called Tom. Apples and Oranges. And that's what this poll is ever-so-thinly disguising. If this poll were to be worded to what it actually means, it would say "Is an actor's web site a valid way to determine the most commonly credited name for that actor in the Invelos database." The answer to THAT question, is a resounding "no". | | | Build a man a fire and you keep him warm for a day. | Posted: | | | | I agree with the direction RH is headed, I would say that the common name concept is best served by usage of the more formal of the two. One could also argue that the role he is best known for, that of Biff Tannen, is billed as Thomas F. Wilson.

The answer to THAT question, is a resounding "no". Stuart has undertaken a series of general threads and polls to develop rules for names. I take this poll at face value. I think the "it depends" discussion belongs in threads specific to individuals such as Mr. Wilson. | | | ...James

I even suggested in the Thomas F. thread that, in the event of a tie, we should take the name from the credit lookup, which would be Thomas F. Wilson. | | | Stuart | | | Last edited: by Gadgeteer |

| Posted: | | | | Many, many, many of the so-called official websites for actors use data pulled directly from IMDB, particularly the filmography. I always carefully scrutize such sites because somewhere it will reference that IMDB data is being used, and if that's the case, I go elsewhere. | | | John

I understand that, but the rest of the site (not just the filmography) can still be useful. If it's about whether someone is named "Joe" or "Joseph", we needn't look at the filmography at his official site, and so it doesn't matter much where it came from. I would first and foremost be interested in what name is plastered in big letters all over the website, or what name is used on the "bio" page, or something like that. Edit: I'm also amazed by the fact that there are two 0-votes (= Terrible)... Surely someone's official site - we're not talking about fansites here - should have at least SOME credibility? Are these the same people who feel the credit lookup tool should be the ultimate source? | | | Last edited: by T!M |

Apples and Oranges. Two Examples: Lauren Bacall is called Betty by friends & associates.Jennifer Love Hewitt is called Love by f&a.I don't think either lady is credited by their "familiar" name - so info from the Official website (or the Officoal one, either - Sorry, Stuart, I couldn't resist. ) may not be altogether useful. | | | Another Ken (not Ken Cole) Badges?
