| Posted: | | | | Hi,
why isn't it allowed to add a birth year to any actor if it can be verified?
It can't hurt, can it? And it would be I nica addition to the actor's information. | | | Karsten DVD Collectors Online

| Posted: | | | | Karsten, I feel for you, I wish so much that we could. I do add them but it would be so nice if we could share.
I also wish we had year of death.
I personally think that if we can't add them to ALL cast, the birth year field should NOT be shown when it is empty. Then to profile doesn't look so in-complete. Same opinion for the middle name field, if not filled, then hidden.
just my opinion. | | | Premium member since 29 August 2002 ----

Plus 'Kens instructions'. I know it's in the rules and I won't break them but we can discuss to change them, can't we? I simply ask for reasons why we shouldn't add them. We have cast pictures, cast common names, but cast birth year should be a no-go? | | | Karsten DVD Collectors Online

It can't hurt, can it? And it would be I nica addition to the actor's information. I guess the idea is to show credits as alike as possible to film credits. Thus, no birth year, as a rule, except when strictly necessary. That said, there may be ways to keep more detailed records and show that additional info in DVDP, if you fancy that. For instance, you might want to write a file for each movie with all the additional info you want, just like EPG guides or HTML Notes, and show it in a separate window (you can do that by using the "HTML windows" editor). I don't know if there would be a way to show a distinct additional info file for each actor, though. That could be asked in the Layouts forum. | | | -- Enry | | | Last edited: by White Pongo, Jr. |

The BY has a specific purpose, before any Rule can be discused one must at least try and understand what the function is for, this is not IMDb we are I suspect will never try and capture every useless datapoint. From my perspective, why do I care, except for its specific function, what someone's BY is, am I going to send out birthday cards, what does it tell me...not very much. We had to come up with a different form than was used elsewhere to define multiple people / one name and that was the method selected. I will say in retrospect, partially because of discussions like this but largely because there is not always a BY available or locatable, we perhaps should have used an alph-numeric system, but that brought with it a totally different set of problems. | Posted: | | | | Some people just don't seem to get it . The Birth Year wasn't introduced to the program so that we can have more trivia about the actors, it was introduced for a very specific purpose. That being to distinguish between two actors with the same name. That is the only instance when it is justified. But, anyone can do whatever their little heart desires with their local database, that's what it's for. Give every actor a Birth Year if you want...just don't contribute them if they're unjustified . | | | My WebGenDVD online Collection | | | Last edited: by Bad Father |

You are a very active member. So I have a question for you and it will come off as being sarcastic but that is not the intent. I understand new members and their lack of abilities to research and so forth, but this topic has been discussed and re-cussed numerous times dating back to March, so why is it necessary to start a whole new thread on covered ground every few months or weeks. The answer was the same then as it is now, a new thread serves no purpose and isn't going to change anything.

| Posted: | | | | Fact is: the birthyear field exist. In my opinion it's a very useful enhancement to the profiler. Due to the very restrictive rules I keep those informations local and therefore I'm not allowed to contribute cast and crew with birthyears. @ Martin: you say "less is more". In this case we could keep profiler 2.4 @ Skip: this is a forum, which means we are allowed to discuss several items. This is definitely not a board for bulletin or issue of orders So keep on flaming... | | | Thorsten |

| Posted: | | | | Karsten, I understand your request but as the BY was only introduced to differentiate different actors rather than a piece of trivia data, then I agree that we only add them as necessary. After all, we don't add biographies or family histories, we don't link actors who are married/siblings/offspring etc. so I don't believe we should start collecting BYs as a piece of data to be added, rather keep it for the purpose it was meant for. And please, discuss as much as you like - moods always change, so it's always worth keeping avenues open. |

You can have all the BYs you want in your DB and still contribute, because you have to explicitly click a checkbox for each BY you want to submit. By default all BY are stripped when you contribute. | | | Matthias |
