How do I determine if I have the original release or not ?

I guess we've all ran across submissions that are different to our profiles because in fact there are 2 releases with the same UPC. Typical changes are e.g. casetypes and images. Often, a DVD was initially released as a jewel years ago, only to be rereleased as keepcase later on.
I'd like to hear of any tips to help determine which release was first. That's because I now have a DVD (which I've had for ages) that is a jewel while the online profile says it's a keepcase, so I suspect my release is earlier.

The only ways I can think of are:
Check the copyright year of the package design on the cover (if the scan is good enough to read).
Check release dates on online shops that carry this info (like Amazon will sometimes list both versions separately).
It's not very easy unfortunately, especially for DVDs you've had lying around for ages, but if you can track down a release date you can compare it to the release date on the profile and see if it matches.

If it's a (big) jewel case, you can count on it being earlier. I haven't seen them being used for new releases in years...

Same thing with snappers vs. keep case.

What you can do when in doubt is try to find online support, such as reviews and retailers info. Otherwise just change your local profile and lock it.

Also you could check the creation-date with DVDInfoPro or have a look at the dates the Files & Folders on the DVD were created.
If it is a later production-batch it would show.

Jewel and Snap Cases are always first releases since they (the distributors) do not use them anymore.
