Hi there,

as I today spot checked the online locks of my DVDs and found only 2 or 3 in my collection, I wonder if the feature still is in our mind? I admit, I forgot it for a while...
Anybody still using it?

I completely forgot about it. I guess if I was bored I could go through and lock things.

I almost wish there was a check-box to submit locks or not, as with Birth Years. I lock down my entire collection, and it's somewhat a pain unlocking a profile to submit, and then relocking it afterwards (for local purposes) again.

Why do you have to unlock your local profile for contribution....? Yes, there is a warning, but it's just that, you can still contribute.

i think the general consensus on this was to lock them if a ping/pong situation occurs - w/o that.... just leave be

So it is okay then to contribute even when you have the entire profile locked locally?

It is possible possible.

Of course, your contribution must adhere to the Rules (which I know your contributions do), which is what the warning is for to remind you of; usually people lock items that are not set up according to the Rules....

My profiles are permanently locked, nothing gets in or out without my approval. And no you do not have to unlock to Contribute.

I was really glad when Ken implemented the online locks, and I used them frequently at the beginning. Back then I even founded a German work group of Profiler users to lock profiles that were constantly overwritten by newbies or, even worse, by users trying to impose their own will on the database. That was about half a year before the German profiler forum was created - ah, the good old times...  .

However, since then the Profile's conditions have improved dramatically because of the voting system and because some "Überusers" are not active anymore. So I haven't used the online lock system for nearly two years now.

Since the implementation of partial contributions, the online locks are only necessary in extreme cases, I think.

We tried the online locks, Ross (Chibul) started a thread where we could notify of fully audited titles, and then vote locks on them on the old IVS site. It was even a sticky thread. Ran along for a few months but then died out.

The problem with locking titles is if there are errors then the locks have to be removed, and that sometimes takes a while to get the attention of the lock voters to remove the lock.

So IMO, unless there is a clear problem, the current system of voting is working fine without using online locks to keep the db clean.
