I have a feeling this is another exclusively guy club, although the urge to organize, sort, and arrange things is generally a feminine trait...

well, you are right on that one. However, there aren't many women who collect things. At least not DVDs.

Actually this type of collection/organising/cataloguing is more of a guy thing because collection is based on primal instincts of 'hunter' (rather than the more femal 'gatherer' pattern) and the associated 'trophies' of the hunt. Not that this explains the shoes thing

Similarly the listing/cataloguing can be related to very mild autism which is AIUI much more likely to affect guys.

Although women are collecting shoes, the most people I know who are collecting something are guys. For example: stamps, books, car models, train models, DVDs, ...

Women collect too.  Spoons, thimbles, plates, dolls, etc.  It's not that they don't collect, it's just that it's silly stuff that guys just automatically tune out.

I think I best be running along now.

Men like to collect expensive stuff.  The dollar value put into a collection is part of the trophy.

I hear you. Sometimes it is scary the amount paid for some of the "stuff" I have collected.

Guys tend to collect things that are expensive to obtain and expensive to maintain.  Women tend to collect things that have historical and family history value, and that also have intrinsic value, such as antique furniture, antique silver spoons, china, handmade quilts, etc.  Things that are generally worth a hell of a lot more than what it costs to buy.  My grandmother had silver spoons that she had collected all her life, found mostly at garage sales, heirloom auctions, etc.  She also had a very unique collection of hand blown glass elephants.  Both of those were sold at auction after she died for many, many thousands of dollars.

Are you suggesting that I'm feminine because of my collections?
