Because Repter was not sure about it, he posted a request in the Contribution request form about it. Since then I've learned that the rules indicate:

The Edition field is for distinguishing between DVDs, and for indicating special versions and collections (for example The Criterion Collection, Widescreen, Full-Screen Edition).

A lot of people replied on this request something along the line: 'as much as I hate it, it is allowed according to the rules'.

So this is the history on this request.

I mentioned this to Repter in a PM discussion we had, and although I think it is a nice addition, I'm afraid that if it is added we get a lot of contributions indicating only a 'collection' change (just like the 'Country of origin' change).

Changing it locally and lock it, can be an option, but I don't think that's the purpose of a shared database. In my opinion you shoud lock as less as possible.

As it is now, there are numerous discussions whether or not a certain banner on the cover serves as an Edition or not. This is typically banners that indicate the DVD being part of some collection, e.g. Movie Gold Collection, Quality Film Collection, Widescreen Collection, etc... Sometimes such DVDs even do have an actual Edition as well, e.g. Director's Cut, Collector's Edition, 2-Disc Edition, etc... Having a separate field for Collection and Edition would make things a lot easier.
