| Posted: | | | | I would like to think I am pretty much a regular on here - I visit quite often, however I must admit that at the start of the discussions about the common name / as credited situation I avoided all discussions due to the level of bickering and general dis-intrest. I have just now decided that the water is calm enough to get in, i checked out the Name Variants plugin (excellent work good guy) and have quite a few variants I need to fix to clean up my database.
My first one was rather easy - i found a studio page listing name different then the credits, so i am getting many yes votes on that title- however many items there does not seem to be too much evidence one way or another, especially when excluding a very popular website that shall not be named to reduce flaming and bickering. there are no rules that i can find on the topic, and I did search the forums, i really didn't find anything definitive.
are most of you guys just linking up your own collections as you see fit and not contributing? Or am I missing something here?
any intelligent conversation without personal battle points is appreciated - thank you. | | | -JoN |

I have not changed my position, I saw what you did and in keeping with my stance on this I vote neutral. Until we have some sort of standards and criteria I don't see any way to implement Common Names. Who determines what is a common name and by what method and don't look at me, i don't want it. Is it James, Jim or Jimmy or maybe a middle name might be thrown in there just to mix things up some. Until we have standards and criteria i will continue with As Credited only.

any intelligent conversation without personal battle points is appreciated - thank you. This whole issue is a royal pain in the arse, and I do my best to avoid it--like the plague! I do my best to avoid doing updates that have any of these things in them. There are no concrete guidelines about where to get information that is verifiable, but the worst part is that most people are not even bothering to find any. Instead, it seems to be that it breaks down on preferences rather than facts. Personally, as you no doubt know, I am not on board with common names as it is implemented at the present time. I don't think it can be made to work sufficiently well to not be a major pain in the butt for a long time to come. | | | John

| Posted: | | | | Not yet, Jon. The only thing I could do is create local links, which may or may not be valid once we get criteria and standards.

| Posted: | | | | I will say there are a handful that I have submitted working within a TV series and I am nervous about them. I use screen caps and compare the two images to verify the same person, then in those cases where I am SOMEWHAT comfortable, I will use the most formal of the two name choices, for Common. But this is not a common occurence for me and I generally give them a wide berth.

| Posted: | | | | Sure Jon. I can create local links and not contribute them, I don't but I could. The reason i don't is because if the standards and criteria are different then I would have a lot of work to re-do, and I am tryingto avoid that like that plague to quote John.

If I find any such common name listings in my local profiles, I remove them once I verify that everything is otherwise correct in the profile. | | | John

I link them up as I see fit and then, if I was to contribute a profile with a Common name [Credited As] ten I may either investigate the case or not contribute the Cast/Crew. From what I understand though, Invelos is encouraging us to use the feature. However, documentation on such changes is required! | | | Achim [諾亞信; Ya-Shin//Nuo], a German in Taiwan. any intelligent conversation without personal battle points is appreciated - thank you. The only common names I have contributed is when there is a clear commonly credited as name used by that actor. Crew I try and stay away from espically Sound Crew, those guys can't ever keep the same name. I've used GoodGuys PlugIn to link cast and crew locally, and when I have gotten around to profiling the film credits. In some cases, I have noticed that the common name I used was the same name the person was actually credited with. Just goes to show there are still a number of profiles out in the DB that need to audited. Hopefully Ken will release his online DB solution soon. | | | Are you local? Dvdprofiler is a very powerful program with many possibilities and it would be a pity not to use them. The possibility to find all the movies where the same actor plays is one of the most interesting, and I have been using it for years, since version 2.x. In fact in 99% of cases, name on credit matches with what we call usually "common name". And when there are little differences (James=Jim or Jimmy, Robert=Bob, or things like Christopher Lambert=Christophe Lambert), I used to choose the most used form, and corrected all my profiles in that way. I know that now it is forbidden by the rules, and I have already written that I think it can be stupid to always follow rules when the common sense says that it is not the best to do. I would find of the highest stupidity to use credit names as "Nicole Mary Kidman", or "Walter Jack Palance", if I found them in credits, as those actors cannot be confused . For years, in fact until June of this year, I contributed hundreds of profiles in this way (I mean new profiles, not little changes that means quite nothing), and I don't think it was so bad as very few were recontributed afterwards, and generally not for that reason. As now we are requested to testify that cast list is exactly that of the credits, I decided to stop contributing, and so I also decided to use the excellent plugin "Name variants for cast & crew" (very good job, very useful ) to have a neat database. Exit all the "credited as", I have now for each actor, director and composer, even unknown ones, one name only . I think it is a pity that this avoids people to contribute profiles that were accepted before . Except some very few purists, most people were very happy when a "good" profile existed, and if they wanted to change something, they did it locally and did not recontribute just to show they were the "best" contributor. But the attitude of some very few people who absolutely wanted to have the last word (in fact have their name in good place in the list of contributors that appeared in the previous versions of the program) began the infernal circle where we are now . | | | Images from movies |
