| Posted: | | | | I just did an update to the cast of "The Big Easy". There are three bands listed in the credits that were not listed in the current profile. As I understand the rules a band name should be entered in the "first name" field. But two of the names are too long to fit. The first is "Terrance Simien & The Mallet Playboys", the "first name" field cut it off at "Terrance Simien & The Mal" so I used that as a "common name" and then put the full name in "as credited". The third band "St. Augustine's Marching Hundred" was cut as "St. Augustine's Marching" so I did it the same way.
At the point I am posting this I have four YES votes and one NO vote. If you feel that the NO vote is correct, can you tell me a better way to enter the data.

| Posted: | | | | I would utilize the rest of the name fields, as I can't find anything in the rules to say you can't.
So, for example: first name: "Terrance Simien" last name: "& the Mallet Playboys"
first name: "St. Augustine's" last name: "Marching Hundred"
I would prefer that than having the names cut off. |

pdf I wasn't clear on which way to vote. Cutting names off is unexceptable, so how should this be done? | | | Last edited: by Kathy |

I would prefer that than having the names cut off. By using the "as credited" field the full name is displayed, only the index ("common name") is cut off. I see the name of a band as fitting under the same rules as a "stage name". Would you split up "The Beatles" into "The//Beatles" or keep it in the "first name" field as "The Beatles//"? pdf | | | Paul Francis San Juan Capistrano, CA, USA | | | Last edited: by pdf256 |

pdf But from a database point of view, it's the name fields that need to be right, not the "credited as". And of course there's no reason to split The Beatles - for a simple reason - it fits! These names don't, so split them and that makes the full name available in the database without any need for credited as. |

pdf First, if the name doesn't fit in the first name field, then use the middle name and last name fields as needed, and make note of that in the notes. Bands don't generally have a 'common name' and a 'real' name, so using that field in that way is wrong. The program has some limitations, and we are always going to find things that don't quite fit for one reason or another. But we shouldn't compromise specific features just to accommodate a name. | | | John

I would go this way as well...I also agree with what Rifter said. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. I am one of the Yes votes and at the time didn't understand your position, John. In retrospect, and with your explanation here, I understand what you meant. It would be perfectly okay, IMHO, to parse the band names using the first/middle/last fields without using the "common name" concept. I'd probably do both bands a little differently, though. first name: Terrance Simien middle name: & last name: the Mallet Playboys first name: St. Augustine's last name: Marching Hundred P.S. I don't plan to change my vote, though, since using "credited as" doesn't violate the rules as I understand them - even though I don't think this is a good way to use them - AND I do agree with the rest of the contribution. | | | Another Ken (not Ken Cole) Badges?
