There has been discussion about this before but very few had any of the high definition format DVDs at the time. Now that more are collecting these, it's time to re-visit this growing problem.

As it is now, some folks are adding custom made banners to the cover art so the front image shows the HD-DVD and/or Blu-Ray logos. Others are simply scanning the whole case and submitting it that way. Many of the current scans look like crap because it's either very low resolution or they were scanned while still in the case.

If you reply, let us know if you have any high definition format DVDs in your collection. Personally, I look at it like the votes for contributions, if it's not in your collection, you shouldn't vote.

I voted Yes althru I don't like the use of a banner either.

But I'd like to see some change to visually distinguish between HD edition and regualar DVD.
Having a little (Blu-Ray) next to the upc code is not enough for me.

It could be adding Blu-Ray to the edition field, so it will appear next to the title or using a banner or scanning the whole case.

We could also add a a small blu-Ray/hd-dvd or DVD icon in front of the titles to distinguish them, but right now, I don't like the way the HD edition are handled.

Please, explain your choice more. I don't understand why you would vote "yes" but not want them as part of the scan.

Any of the other things you mention are feature requests and have nothing to do with the cover art.

I voted No.  Although I have yet to invest in a HD format, IMO, the banner is not part of the cover art but part of the case and should not be added.  The media type, whether BD, HD or DVD, is covered in the program iiself and is proudly displayed both within the program and online so adding it to the cover art is redundant and unecessary.  Of course, your mileage may vary .

Well there's a nice neutrally-phrased poll.

That said, I do lean in the same direction. The only real argument I've heard for having the banner included is to spot hi-def discs easily in the online collection. Which desperately needs overhauling anyway so personally I don't see the big deal. Follow the proper rules for now and pressure Ken to update the online collection, even if it's just to stick format icons on hi-def entries. Robert, he is your father's brother.

With the current features, having the banner seems the only way to distinguish the blu-ray from regular dvds.
So by voting Yes...  I'm voting to have some new features added.
But I agree, the cover scan should be for the cover only, but currently, there's no other way to visualise the difference between blu-ray and dvd.

Someone looking at my collection, will see "Casino Royale" in the list and even if he clicks on it, it won't be easy to see it's a blu-ray, unless the scan include the whole case (as it does currently) or a banner.

An option missing in the poll is to keep the whole case.  I know... It's ugly but it's getting the job done.  But between two evils, maybe it's the less of the two.

I own HD-DVDs and voted No.

The banner is part of the case, not the cover.
It is enough for me to have HD-DVD appear in the general section.

Although something is needed in the online and mobile database to help distinguish them.

What are you talking about? There is a media field for this, your DVDP should show you a DVD/DVDVD/BluRay logo depending on what kind of media disc you are looking at.

At this particular juncture, peter based upon what you said and the argument you used. Then why is it we list Widescreen or Widescreen Collection even when it is not by definition a distinguishing trait (old terminology) unless there is FF Mate to it, which as often as not there is not. After all we have a field designed exclusively for the Video data, it's redundant.

Seems to me like your argument is very similar to the one I just used. Just curious. That represents a built-in inconsistency, if that is the argument.

how bout next time you want to create a poll leave the editorial comments out of it

It could have just as correctly said
Yes - Continue with the current method of handling this
instead of the negative way you put it:
Yes - Even though it's a violation of the current rules, add the banners. We can rewrite the rules later.

Or even better
Use the banner:
Yes
No
Neutral

Talk about trying to taint the voters

Yes, in the program, the logo is there and it's perfect that way.
But online, there's no logo

Well there is a difference skip. If you add a title by name, the movies will be listed including the media descriptor (or whatever the name of the first row is). However it will not show you if it's a wide or pan&scan version.

And also don't forget, the widescreen description is part of the actual cover on DVDs, where the BluRay "banner" is actually part of the case and you need to edit your scan to incorporate this.

It actually agree, however this is something Ken should change in the online listing and not being "repaired" by the community, which could even require to rechange the coverscans again at a later point.

IF Ken decides to do this is would be very easy to remove the banners and re-submit without them. A simple crop would take care of it. Easier than the CoO submissions we've been getting.

My vote is to continue with the established convention of adding the banners.

I voted no. I hate the parts of the case in the image. We don't like it when someone includes part of the case of a dvd, so why should we for HD/BR.

I've scanned all 9 of my BR discs and not one have I scanned with the case logo. Although the 2 Pirates of the Caribbean BR's discs, have a slipcase and those do have the Blu-Ray logo on the top of the slip case. So therefore those do have them.

Oh and currently, 5 of the images showing in my sig are my blu-ray covers.

You're right, changing it back only requires you to use the built in crop option. However NOW it requires me to use some picture editing software to actually change the coverdesign.
