Hi!

There's a Yahoo group for the utility IMDBtoDVDP. It's a simple program that provides an aid for entering cast and crew members based on data found on third party websites. It can save a lot of time, but it should only be considered as a starting point for entering the data manually.

You can find it here:

http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/IMDBtoDVDP/

IMPORTANT:

1) Please use the group for all questions, suggestions, bug reports, etc. I'll also always upload the latest version to the file area.

2) Do NOT discuss anything regarding this here, because Ken doesn't allow this (for legal reasons).

3) Do NOT contribute titles entered with this utility - use it just for your private collection! If you contributed such titles, you could actually improve the quality of the online database and the hardliners here don't seem to want that to happen ;-)

4) Do NOT use this utility at all, because it violates the terms of the third party website!

5) Use it at your own risk, have fun and save a lot of tedious work!

Regards,
Martin.

By started this thread you are already talking about it here.  In my opinion your post promotes the use of a program that scrapes data from IMDB which is clearly illegal and you have already been asked not to this here.

If I was moderator here I would have locked this thread instead of replying....which I'm not gonna do anymore now that I've stated my opinion about this.

You comment about IMDb accuracy is simply ludicrous, MH. Tell me...what film has IMDb ever made... any of them? What Rules does IMDb governing users data in IMDb. Does IMD require that you backup your claim, or can you just make the claim, is that backup, if any is required, then posted permanently for all other users to be able to see and reference. The answer is NO. First thing you have to understand that there is only a SINGLE source of data that is accurate relative to each and every film, that is that films own Credits. Once you get a head around that concept, and start comparing the REAL data to IMDb and most other sites, you suddenly discover that IMDb is a total disaster.

But still way better than most of the "RC2, Germany" titles in the DVDP database, unfortunately... I still prefer 95% correctness of IMDB titles over 10% correctness or complete lack of crew and cast in DVDP, sorry! Also, it should be used as a STARTING POINT FOR MANUAL EDITING. Nobody keeps you from spending a few minutes more for checking the entries!

Whoever shares my opinion - please take a look at the utility. Whoever doesn't - please DO NOT USE IT!

And please everybody: don't mock what you don't understand...

I'll mock what I please, thank you very much.

Mock, mock.

Maybe instead of complaining about the accuracy uyou allege, you should get to work according to the Rules and help improve that situation.

Not in my experience. Again in my experience it's easier to start from scratch in most cases than to rejig their data to get it to match the actual credits.

Besides you completely fail to understand that Ken doesn't want any discussion on using data from IMDB, regardless of whether it's used as a starting point and contributed or not. Not to mention (oh heck why not) IMDB's own terms of use:

Have you got their consent?

Actually I think he did get it.  If you're willing to ignore all the legal hurdles and when used right, a tool like this is very helpful.  And it's not the first of it's kind.  There have been several others and they're very helpful.

I'd say if this is the last post ever on this topic, then I have no problem with what he posted.  I won't use it, but there are lots of users who will likely find this very useful.

If he had given his tool another name, the name of the 3rd party website would not even be mentioned here. It is other users that discuss this here in length. I think he has learned his lesson and if you want to use this tool as a starting point is really a matter of taste.

What I would like to see would be a tool that loads the data in some kind of editor, where you could manipulate the data before uploading it into the profiler.
