I don't know if it is even technically possible, but would it be possible to somehow merge some fields that are always common within the same title in spite of locality, like:

Original Title
Country of Origin
Production Year
Genres
Cast & Crew

So if US Spider-Man cast is edited it would effect to all localities Spider-Man profiles. That would keep the db more accurate and remove a lot of duplicate information from db = faster db, less disc space etc.

I think that the key field could be generated somehow from original title and production year, as an example. The ones with the better knowledge about DBs, speak up

Separating the movie details from the DVD details has been discussed a few times. This way the DVD would simply link to the movie(s) it contains. The discussions usually touch on the need to track separate versions of the same movie (with different cast etc) and how to name these.

It is technically possible - and even a good thing to do from a database point of view (it's refered to as normalization of the database), but it's quite a fundamental change (both to database and user interface) so even if Ken agrees it should be done, other easier tasks will probably be higher on the priority list.

I think creating a profile that is created from the Original Title, Production Year and Director, would make it unique. Then attaching a DVD to the "movie profile", would link all the said fields to the profile.

For cast and crew this has already been requested (see http://www.invelos.com/Forums.aspx?task=viewtopic&topicID=157812).

Ken's statement was:

"DVD Profiler's local database model consists of 16 relational tables.  The central databases consist of many many more.  As with any complex data model, there are virtually unlimited possible design patterns.  Each design has positives and negatives that affect program speed, backwards compatibility with existing program functions and add-ons, ease of data entry, accuracy of data entry, data flexibility, central data integrity, etc, etc.

A small step towards reducing duplicate entry is the integrated copy/paste of cast and crew.  There are other ways as well, some will be seen before 4.0."

Yes, someting can be made, but it would take some time to research how it should be done. For example, if we base it on Original Title, Production Year, and Director we would have a problem with animated features where the credit changes between the various language releases. Runtime can also change between countries for the same movie.

Again - I am NOT saying it can't be done, but it has to handle exceptions from the start.

On the first view its agreat ID!

BUT:

Only cast and crew can be linked with the movie.
a lot of other information are different from country to country. And also by distribution.

very common exaples are the James Bond editions in the different countrys around the world. Always differnet running time. The same story with "lord of the rings", "Star Waes" and so on.

Also the Studio Information is not common. Look in the cinema how many Prefix Logos you see in the specific country. They are different country by country. For example Dream Works come in Germany with Dream Works Logo (distributed by Walt Disney), but also with Universal Logo and / Or walt Disney Logo.

I Think the idea is a great thing. But the result will be a nightmare in different country, specially in europe and eastern country.

But maybe it is possible to do this on a country base only?
