I've been attempting to move across to Linux for a while now, and my new computer looks like it will actualy enable me to do it (don't know what the old one had against it, but hey).

I've been sadly aware of the issue that 3.x will not run in WINE, so thought that I'd a) give it a try to see what happened, and b) see what WineHQ had to say about it. The answer to a, was that it installed but would not run (at least, not without an unbreakable wall of "Invalid floating point operation" error messages). When looking into b), I noticed that there was no-one taking the DVD Profiler torch forward in the WINE community, and hence they're taking no interest what-so-ever.

I therefore took it upon myself to take charge of the situation. I have volunteered myself as the super maintainer, updated the applications database to show version 3.0x, and reported a bug to winehq.

In order to try and get this bug brought to the attention of the developers, I urge all those with an interest to follow this link (bug ID 8460), and vote for this bug to be addressed (please not that this will require you to register).

Also, as I lack any real Linux experience, my bug report is somewhat lacking. If you believe that you can add anything more to help with the resolution of the bug (e.g. logs), please do.

If Ken is unable to support versions for non-Windows OS, our combined efforts may help convince those lovely people at WINE to do it for us!

Not that there's much to report, but I thought that I'd do a little update.

So far, no-one one the WINE project has taken the bug report on board, and I'm still waiting to find the time to get my Linux machine working and do some proper testing to try and narror down the problem.

For info, I believe that the way in which bugs are dealt with in WINE is that one of the many developers finishes their current work and goes off to look for a bug that catches their eye. Bugs are more likely to be progresed if i) they are of interest to the developer, ii) they have a lot of votes (i.e. lots of people want it fixed), iii) the report has sufficent detail for easy diagnosis.

Being of interest to the developers is out of our hands, unless we can sufficiently identify the problem as being in their particular field (which we have not yet achieved). We now have substancial number of votes associated with the bug report (107 votes from 7 voters) so should be highly visible - however, please note the following paragraph. Finally, the bug report is woefully lacking in detail, mainly due to my lack of experience with WINE and lack of time to put into a full diagnosis. I'm hoping this will change in the next few weeks, but I've been hoping this for a while now.

The one extra thing that I can ask you to do (unless you want to do some diagnosis that is) is to vote for the application version as well as the bug report (someting I missed until today). This will also help to raise the profile of the application and help to get the problem looked at. If you follow this link and log in (from the left hand menu), you will see a 'votes' section appear at the bottom of the menu on the left. To put this into perspective, 11 votes or more will get DVD Profiler into the top 25 applications, 45 would get it to number one.

With a little effort from all of us (and more than a little more from me), we will hopefully be able to make a difference.

Got my vote registered...  This would be nice, this and photoshop are the things keeping me from moving completely to Ubuntu on my laptop.

My next machine will be a Macbook Pro. As soon as I save the the 3k for it. I will always keep a windoze computer running just because not everything will ever cross platform. I have a Dell laptop for work and when I first got it the laptop would scream and run really great. My IT department forces updates and loads all kinds of stuff remotely and now pretty much it runs slower than my P3 866. I like Linux but I really can't decide on any particular distro.

Of course, nothing we do is a guarantee that anyone on the WINE project will do anything (afterall, we're asking them to do something for nothing), but it won't hurt to try.
