Hello,

Would it be possible to add a seconday source, such as IMDB or DVD Empire to supplement, the online DB?

From the online db I find:

1. Front & back images the same
2  Images & profiles missing
3. Complicated contribution protocol
4. Fear of sharing (security) issues, If I share can someone exploit my machine?
5. Slow to arrive, images/profiles example 'Scoop' not available also 'Pirates of the...Curse' no image.

Thanks
Rico

Not unless you are willing to pay more to allow Invelos to pay for licensing to be able to use such data from third party sources.

You mention Pirates..Curse not available, for what, its been in the Db for two years with images at least for R1. I see at least three UPCs available for R1, plus the BD, mine is 786936-224306. You can always ask if i have a cover set and if I do I am only to happy to forward a copy of my file copies which exceed the standards Invelos uses.

I am confused by the request Rico, it is a user built database so it relies on us to do some work in 'filling' it? Have tried to answer ways that may fulfil your needs, it is what I do...

1. Front & back images the same
scan your covers, or cut and paste the covers locally from a site like Axel or dvdempire until scans are submitted by another user.
2.  Images & profiles missing
Images as above. Profiles you can do yourself, even if you just start it by putting in the UPC and locality. Invariably others will start adding to it in time
3. Complicated contribution protocol
See above, you are not forced to profile and contribute 100% of a title. Any participation helps the community as a whole.Do not be put off by some of the arguments on the forum, and be thick-skinned about no votes, it's never personal in my experience
4. Fear of sharing (security) issues, If I share can someone exploit my machine?
No
5. Slow to arrive, images/profiles example 'Scoop' not available also 'Pirates of the...Curse' no image
You will find this will improve once everything from the database swap settles down, for all the latest releases I seldom struggle to find them. Region 2 and more specialist dvds such as sports etc you may need to enter yourself.

Maybe if you try voting on contributions first, it will give you a better insight into the process, or even entering your first submission? 99% of people will willingly help you learn how easy submitting can be.

Out of interest, are you still using the other Collectorz program that you spoke of in the other forum?

Just noticed you don't have any dvds in your collection???

Was your question a serious one, or is there another angle here?

Maybe his collection is imply not public, or maybe he doesn't care having on line, that doesn't mean he doesn't have any.

Hi Guys,

Thank You for your thoughtful & helpful posts!

It's late & I'll answer more completley, in the AM.

1. As for collectorz, no I'm not using it, this was a stop-gap method til Invelos returned. I did purchase intervoactive 2.4, next I posted about updates & found Invelos 3, with all my collection in Profiler 3, I then deleted profiler 2.4 next the war btwn Inter & Invelos > I wronglly reasonded that invelos would not return for along time > I had no luck in manually adding to Invelos, yes I posted > google search for movie cataloging software, & ratings > Sea something or another (see post at intervoactive) listed 3 dvd cataloging softwares as 5 star > email collectorz > they offered me a discount & said any Profiler user could have the same > I emailed back saying that I should get a better deal as I've posted about your disconunt > next they emailed me a license 'free' for collectorz > i emailed them telling them of the pulled post & they could cancel or not honor the license they gave me > they said go ahead & use it > I felt I got the license somewhat left handedly, & posted for users to PM me about the collectorz discount. > next all movies, images profiles were in collectorz, collectorz was ok (not nearly as nice & polished as Profiler3) but it was really nice if the movie was not in there online DB, you could get it from DVD Empire, or Amazon, or IMDB, these could be used if the title was not in there db > next good news the war is over > I got my collection up to date in Profiler 3 > next add/remove collectorz.

Note: I believed a prolonged battle between the two parties, would render Pro3 not useable (by me, trouble manually entering, see above) & I ackwardly stumbled upon a free license to coll...z, & felt somewhat obligated to mention in the PM's about the discount to coll...z.

Profiler 3 is hot, very nice & I'm sooooo happy the war is over!

Why are you so sure that, one cannot get infected by sharing DB? To add an image to a post, you/i need to allow a script to run. Malicious script is out there in the wild. Because noone, has been infected here, does not mean it can't happen. I find it difficult to get people to try FAH (Stanford's distributed computing project Folding@Home) for fear of security or malicious code. They have security measures in practice.

Hi Rico,
I may be wrong but I believe the reason we can't be infected is because the only information shared is either text (profile) or image (covers) and I've never heard of any viruses etc. being able to run from either of these formats. Also, the only scripts that are run in the program are written by Ken, and he wouldn't do that to us unless he has a really, really bad day!
So the only way I can see anything bad happening is if someone were to write a malicious plug-in. But you'd still have to voluntarily download, install and run it.

Contributing profiles and images, from a security perspective, is no different from visiting this website.  The only connection made is between your machine and our server, just as it is now as you read this message.  DVD Profiler makes similar connections when downloading profiles and images.

The only 100% secure way to ensure you are safe is to unplug your computer, and I bet the script kiddies are working on a way to infect you then too.

Keep your Windows updates current and run a decent virus scanner, and never choose to run an executable without considering the source, and you should be fine.

As mentioned above, plugins are programs.  You must choose to trust the source of the plugin just as you would when downloading an application elsewhere.

There has been an exploit of good old MS code that could be embedded in jpegs.

Article here. But that epxloit was patched a long time ago. As Ken says keep up to date and you don't have any problems.

Hi Guys,

First, Thank You, for all your thoughtful & helpful comments, very much appreciated!

Yesterday here after composzing & just prior to submit, i hit a button & my post was gone. Next Invelos was down for awhile.

I'm very happy to hear that the risk of obtaining malicious code, by sharing my collection, is minimal at best. My five attack dogs, currently sleeping in my system tray, can continue there siesta, while sharing & enjoying Invelos.

Ken actually & unplugged computer can be quite dangerous. Thinking 'unplugged' equals the ultimate protection. I grabbed the cords plug, & yanked it out. I did not reaize that the viruses, had spread to the plug. Next thing you know I'm infected. Those crazy 1's & 0's, leaked from my HD & were waiting for me on the plug. Bastards!

This may seem dumb, but the icon (while compzing this) to add images to a post, when clicked, prompts me to temp 'allow script.' When allowed a new window appears, where I enter a path to an image, & it does not end up in the post. This very diff than other forums. What am I doing wrong?

I mentioned that the movie 'Pirates of the...Curse...' has a profile, but no image, Skip informs that the image has been available for quite some time. When i highlight that title > online > refresh image > I still get no image. Note this is one reason, for the request to spplemental sources IMDB, etc. I'm a little confused as to why some users have an image for this title & i can't seem to get it.

Thanks Again!

Take Care
Rico

Baloney!  I've been running that way for as long as PCs have been around, and never had a successful hack, virus, worm, trojan, or stealth critter.  I am the only one who uses my computer, so I know what comes in and goes out.

Don't let paranoia stop you from utilizing the full power of your computer as you see fit.  As soon as you make changes in YOUR behavior to counter theirs, they've won the game.
