I am wondering why people scan the top covers of HDDVD discs, i mean the part with the logo and red casing.
I think we should only scan the cover and not the box.
So many profiles on the HDDVD have the box in it.
Should i rescan and submit just the covers.
With the new profiler there is no need to make a distinction between normal DVD's and HDDVD's by the cover cause we can tag the discs now by type.

But they look so much better with it, and makes them that much easier to recognize at a glance when the front image loads.

That's my opinion, even though I don't have any HD DVD or Blu-ray

I prefer them with the top of the case. Easier to ID.

What I don't like about the new covers is that people are insisting that the top section is airbrushed to hell so you end up with a flat red or blue bar with the logo in it.
That to me is not a cover scan, we shouldn't need to spend ages using a graphics program creating an image. A cover scan is a cover scan, and once you start manipulating it to that extent it stops being a scan and starts becoming a graphic.
I've had people complaining that you can see the rounded edge of the cover on some of my scans - well, duh! the cover has round corners - you either have a round bit visible or you lose some of the cover. And I don't see why I should spend ages airbrushing the corner out - that's not a cover scan to me!
Sorry, this turned into a bit of a rant!
But in short, I like having the logo there, but if people want a clean, perfect colour bar, then a template should be supplied.

I agree with northbloke.

I usually end up replacing every HD DVD and Blu-Ray cover images with images of the covers taken from themanroom.com.  I know I'm the only one but, I even like there images where the cases are angled slightly.  HD DVD and BD are different then DVD and I want them to stand out and look different.

I prefer the covers with the top of the case or the whole case, much easier to identify. I also use the scans/cover art from themanroom.com locally and lock the images. They look better to me than most of our scans.

I like my BD covers with the top.

And yes, I photoshop a little to make them more consistent.

I have taken 2 sets (made a layer) in which I can put all the (paper) cover scans.
It just takes a minute to make them.

I agree, they are not real scans or photographs, but they look realy nice. That's my humble opinion.

if you want to do it the way I do it, go to http://bluray.ligfietsers.be/blu-ray.htm
These are the .psd files I have created.

have fun.

mmm in DVD-Profiler we have a special tag for HDDVD and Bluray so i think it's useless and annoying. I just would like to have the cover and nothing more. Besides that there is a filter so u can quickly see what type of dvd it is....

There's nothing wrong with tidying up images to make them nicer, for example I notice in your template you still have the rounded edges of the cover visible, which is fine by me.

What worries me is when scans are rejected because they haven't been photoshopped or airbrushed smooth. This creates a standard that a lot of people won't be able to achieve and means only an exclusive few will be allowed to contribute scans for HD or BD. That's unacceptable to me, this is a user database after all.

Harry:

This discussion was had at IVS with pretty much the same outcome. I am not buying HDs or BBs yet> I haven't liked what I have seen in most of them thus far, with a few exceptions, but when I do I would probably consider the HD or BD part of the cover. Don't forget Harry, we list Widescreen as part of the Edition DESPITE the fact that that specific information is already part of the program. Get on board.

Would it not be possible (just freeriding here) that we indeed just contribute the papercover and that DVDProfiler automaically adds the Blu-ray or HD DVD strip at the top...

Of course I don't know what will happen with the cases in the future, will they remain the same once they are generally accepted and 'replaced' the dvd format.

And will special editions have the same cases or will there become a diversity of cases like we have for the dvd format.

eg. the Mission Impossible trilogy, is that a paper box around 3 cases? Than my theory of putting them in by default is already useless.

Nice idea minimoke,
but you're right - once they start to release custom cases, we're basically screwed!

Although  - how about a check-box in the "edit cover images" section that adds the banner voluntarily to the top of a scan? That way we only submit the cover which would keep one half happy, but the other half can still have the banner if they want it, so they're happy too!

Mini:

The consensus opinion is that they want the entire image, not just part of it.<shrugs> Like i said, I am realtively neutral on this for the time beingm myself, but i believe i would agree with the consensus.

But Skip, minimoke's idea was to have the program add the banner, therefore allowing both sides of the argument to have what they want!
If DVD Profiler were to do this I seriously doubt those who want the banner would refuse to scan or submit only the image, especially if they know they're getting it added later.

I don't know about that.

You are getting into areas of personal preference, which is perview of your local database. There is NO way the Online database can be all things to all people.
