I posted a request I had on the tech support board, but I think I should include it here as well.

In the filter selections, where you can choose AND or OR when selecting your filters, adding NOT would add to the possible filters.

My need was to generate a list on only my movies or TV shows.  TV is easy, all I do is check Television genre and all I get are TV sets.  If NOT was a selection choice, it would easily remove just the TV sets leaving only the movies.

Thanks for the consideration.

This is quite simple to do with tags.  If you marked all your TV profiles with a TV tag for instance and you click on the TV tag you have setup, it will filter out all the profiles that don't have the TV tag set.

BUT, if you click the TV tag again, the checkmark disappears leaving an empty checkbox.  This will filter out anything that does have the TV tag set.

This doesn't help much if you're trying to use Genres to filter by of course.  Still, it's worth looking into tags.  They're far more powerful and it would take just a few moments to set everything with a TV genre to have a TV tag.

I got a suggestion on the tech support forum to use flags to acheive the results, and that worked.

I really didn't consider tags before, as the genre already fit that need, so my tunnel vision only saw that and didn't consider other features.

I'm going to play around with them more now to see what else I can get it to do.

Thanks again

Basic idea of the well buillt data base is usually that no information is typed twice. If we already have TV genre, there is no point of typing this same info again to tags. NOT- filter would be much better solution in general.

That's database normalization.  And I don't see what database design theory has to do with real life where hundreds of thousands of users have permission to update the database.

I don't care that there's already a field that covers genres.  I (and many, many others) find it extremely useful to use tags for this purpose.  At the very least, it's a piece of data that no other user has access to, so I can set it up and never have to worry about someone changing it.

That's not to say the original request is without merit.  This is just to point out an alternate, and potentially better way, to achieve the same goal today.  And tags are useful for a lot more than this specific example and well worth looking into.
