| | Posted: | | | | Occasionally, I like to go through my collection, and make sure I haven't missed adding any titles, and to be certain I know where all of my discs are. An audit system could make that easier.
The way I invision in, the discs would be scanned into a separate temporary database, and the two databases would be compared, pointing out discs that should be in the collection that aren't and discs that are in the collection, but not the real database.

Why not just print off a report and tick off the titles when you see them on your shelf/in the case etc.  Apologies if I've got the wrong end of the stick. |

| | Posted: | | | | No, you have it right. It's essentially the same way we do a physical inventory of a retail store. Each of the items is scanned into a portable collection device, and the list is compared to the master database of what is supposed to be in the store.
Generating a printed list and ticking them off would have the same end result...just with a lot of paper turning involved (and is in fact the method I use now). Scanning takes much less time (although it would have to be set up so that it didn't fetch the data off of the Net. It would just generate a long file of barcodes, compare them to the DB and point out discrepancies. Of course, some would have to be handled as exceptions since they don't have barcodes...but those are few and far between.
Think about a disc like Sin City. Doing it on paper, you flip through three pages to find the S's. Then you go down the list looking for Sin City only to turn around and go back as you realize it's really an F for Frank Miller's Sin City. In that amount of time, I could have scanned the barcodes on twenty discs.

I suppose all you need is the ability to compare 2 local databases side by side? And maybe a report detailing differences? |

| | Posted: | | | | I just did exactly that last week. I went through all my discs and scanned them using my barcode, and then, from Excel, I compared the scanned UPC to the actual UPC available in DVD Profiler (using the XML export of DVD Profiler).
Made me spot quite a few discrepancies between the real UPC I have and the UPC entered in DVDP.
A plugin would do the job wonderfully, if one of the plugin developer would be interested. |

| | Posted: | | | | Before this goes too far and actually gets developed, I should add my two cents on what I'd like to see it do.
First, it'd be handy if one could either scan UPCs one at a time, directly into the Audit form OR allow someone to import a list (CSV, XML, or 1 UPC/line etc...) that was generated by a data collection device or other source.
Secondly, as mentioned before, the audit should kick out discrepancies. Both "Missing from Collection" as well as "You scanned this, but it's not in your collection".
Third, for those titles that were scanned but were not previously part of the collection, it'd be nice if there was an "add to collection now" button beside the entry in the report.
Maybe also going as far as checking in titles that are part of the physical scan list, but are currently flagged as checked out to someone.
Hope that's not too redundant from other posts. Just want to make sure my wishes are expressed. I'd love to help out in developing this, but I'm afraid I just don't have the know-how to do so at this time.

| | Posted: | | | | I suggest you use the XML export feature (or the CSV Export plug in) for your purpose. E.g. export your main database, export your temporary database, and use Excel to compare the two lists.
With a few simple formulas, Excel would even show you the discrepancys automatically. |

| | Posted: | | | | I to would love to see an automated plug-in that would allow you to do the Audit I have moved 5 times in three years and every time I get to a new location I have to go though and ensure that everything made it to the new location. I'm sure that a lot of people could make the it work using Excel but it would be best to have it intergrated into the database. Not everyone has a desire to by a second program just to do something that should have been a standard feature in the first program. |

I just met a great individual that has the anwser to the audit problem. His alias is TLEVEL. He has programmed a plugin that allows you to search by barcodes on the main screen it also allows allows you to flag the profiles when it finds them it is a simple process then to filter out all the flagged profiles so that you can see which dvds you are missing/haven't scanned. Click on the bellow link to access the forum that we have talked about the plugin. If your serious about doing on monthly/yearly inventory then this program will be great.
