As a spin-off of my last post, can anyone recommend a fool-proof way of sharing the database between a home and office computer? Is the only solution to copy it onto a portable HD and take it back and forth?  As you'll see from my last post, I'm having trouble with sharing it via upload/download to the online collection.

I did this repeatedly with DVDPro 2x.  I have yet to try it in 3x.  With the addition of Mobile, I haven't had the need to have my collection on the two PC's.  I just use my Mobile at home.

Insofar as the thumb option, I would back up my database on the work pc, copy the backup file only to my thumb, then restore the backup file to my home PC.  I would still have to update the Profile list, but all of my updated Profiles remained updated.

use the dvd profiler backup option to a Memory stick, CD-RW or DVD-RW. 700 dvd's is aprox. 85 MB
Sources for one or more of the changes and/or additions were not submitted. Please include the sources for your changes in the contribution notes, especially for cast and crew additions.

I just use backup without images and email it to myself... the file is only about 3Mb for about 2000 titles ( a bit bigger than 2.x) and since I use the images from IVS I just do an occasional "Restore All Images" (or restore them specifically if I notice one missing).

You should never use upload/download collection for this purpose as you may lose data and it is only meant as a 'last resort'... the proper backup facility (with or without images) is the way to go.
It is dangerous to be right in matters where established men are wrong

Get an office notebook computer. Problem solved.

Yeah, ideally I need to just centralize the database and run it on a single laptop that I can take back and forth.

The problem is that we all Mac-based at the office (and at home). I can run DVD Profiler under Virtual PC on my current laptop and my office G5.  But my laptop isn't the fastest - both the processor and the wireless card - so DVD Profiler is painfully slow.

The new Mac Powerbooks and desktop computers are all Intel-based, and Virtual PC doesn't run on them. (Microsoft has said they have no plans to built a Mac Intel version of Virtual PC.)

Theoretically, with the Intel Macs, you should now be able to run Windows apps within the Mac OS environment.  In fact, there's an application called Crossover that allows just that.  I installed DVD Profiler under Crossover, and it seems to work fairly well - except it always freezes about halfway through an Image Update or Profile Update, especially if there are lots of profiles/images to update.

I might try Apple's "Boot Camp", which turns your Intel Mac into a dual-boot machine - Windows or Mac OS.

A 'portable application' would be nice -

I think bootcamp may be your best bet. Does VMWare have a virtualisation solution for MACs? VMWare is a better virtualisation technology and it runs on LINUX like the new MAC OS. (Just checked. Doesn't look like it which is a pity).

Here's the info on Boot Camp, in case other DVD Profiler users with Mac Intel CPUs want to try it:
