| Posted: | | | | Just wanted to ask you guys what you think of the credit "Written for the screen by"? The film in question is the US region 1 release of the horrendous Nicolas Cage remake "The Wicker Man" (EAN 085391-100935).
In the credits it says "Based on an original screenplay by Anthony Shaffer", and then on the next screen "Written for the screen and directed by Neil LaBute".
IMO this should qualify as a "Screenwriter" credit for LaBute, since it says "Written for the screen" (i.e. "Screenwritten"), NOT just "Written by", and it is based on other original material.
Any opinions on this? I have 8 Yes votes and 1 No vote on my contribution. I will be happy to remove my contribution if you guys think I'm wrong. | | | Last edited: by Behemot |

| Posted: | | | | I have no opinion on the correct credit, but maybe Mr. LaBute would be just fine with not getting credit for this piece of crap anyway.... | | | Lutz |

IMO Mr. Neil LaBute should be credited with screenwritter and Anthony Shaffer with original material by. Opinions?...other than the remake was a huge waste of celluloid . | | | My WebGenDVD online Collection |

| Posted: | | | | I'm going for "as credited."
When the new rules are written, it simply must be decided if "Written for the screen by" = written by, or screenwriter...
The rules on writing have needed a revision for ages now. | | | Erik

| Posted: | | | | "Written By" means that the same person wrote the "original material" and wrote the "screenplay". Since someone else is credited with "original material", then the "written for the screen" credit has to be a screenwriter credit in DVDP. Sure wish we could enter crew in the same way that we enter cast. It would end all of these discussions. | | | Hal |

Then how about the films where you have both original material and written by? Mr. Stephen "Traffic" Gaghan is a big fan of this, as is Sofia Coppola. Quote: Since someone else is credited with "original material", then the "written for the screen" credit has to be a screenwriter credit in DVDP. This one needs a poll by the official rules team... A few days back it was the "hip thing" to post your original date of registry at IVS, so thought mine (which clearly is a bug... I think) would be amusing | | | Erik

| Posted: | | | | Clearly there are no rules without exceptions.
If the credits actually list a "Written By" and an "OMB" credit, then obviously there is no question as to how it should be credited in DVDP. This is a relatively rare occassion, however.
If however it doesn't actually say "Written By" in the film credits, I don't think that credit should ever be used. That's my personal opinion. | | | Hal | | | Last edited: by hal9g |

| Posted: | | | | Have you actually run a report asking just for every Director in your collection?
Or every Sound Editor, or any other role?
I suppose there might be some use for this type of information, but I honestly can't think what it would be. | | | Hal |

| Posted: | | | | It would be similar to asking for every instance of "John Doe" in the role field of the cast section.
Might be interesting trivia to know every movie that had a character named "Mr. Treadwell" in it, but not something I'd use. | | | Hal |

I'm not sure that I do understand your question completely. But yes, I wan't to be able to create a report or skin (aehm HTML window) that only lists the director for every movie in my collection and not the complete crew, because most of the time I'm not interessted in sound crew at all. But my coffe table book has to list the director for every movie. And I want to be able to search for all films which are directed by Tarantino. I may not be interessted in the films he has written the screenplay for. |
