| Posted: | | | | I did a search, but couldn't find any reference to this topic:
Have rules been established for Cast Credits for music and/or concert DVDs?
I've seen a number of variations, for example:
Jimi Hendrix .... Himself Jimi Hendrix .... Guitar and vocals Jimi Hendrix .... (Guitar/vocals) or just plain Jimi Hendrix ....
I wouldn't consider "Guitar and vocals" to be a "role", but for our purposes it certainly provides more useful information than "Himself".
I understand that we're supposed to enter Cast/Roles "as credited", but in most cases concert DVDs don't have a proper "cast" listing.
And if we ARE going with "Guitar and vocals", should we also clarify how a multi-instrumentalist should be listed? For example:
Guitar and vocals (separated by "and") Guitar, Vocals (separated by comma) Guitar/Vocals (separated by slash) Guitar & Vocals (separated by ampersand)
Thx. |

It must be as credited, but additional cast can be entered using the "uncredited" feature. The roles are open in this case (subject to voting), but if you can use a source to take the roles from, such as a booklet or insert that came with the DVD or the promotional website for the DVD, then so much the better. | | | Last edited: by Squirrelecto |

| Posted: | | | | There are no rules for this at the moment, but I agree it does need to be defined.
I think that the same applied to Sport DVDs - having all participants credited as himself/herself is far less useful than "team" player, driver, coach, manager, etc.
It was touched on in some of the Rules group discussions but never gained much momentum. I guess it needs raising again the rules forum here! | | | Andy

| Posted: | | | | The "actors", as already mentioned above, must be "as credited". For the roles the Rules currently say this: Quote: Quote: If an actor is credited by name but does not have an associated role, you may use another source to identify the role. In each case, list Actor’s names and roles (when given) exactly as they are in the credits and in exactly the same order credited. So, if the credits don't mention roles, you could find them elsewhere or "document" them: "I have watched the DVD and, yes, Jimi Hendrix plays the Guitar and Sings." I agree, for uncredited Roles I'd like to see some "guidelines" as well, although I'm not sure they'd help streamline the Rules Personally I would favor separation by comma. | | | Achim [諾亞信; Ya-Shin//Nuo], a German in Taiwan. Is there a place where we can qualify the role? E.G. "Jimi Hendrix plays the guitar like a god" |

| Posted: | | | | IMO this is an area that does not desperately require a rule clarification. I own several music DVDs (video compilations and live concerts) and I've yet to see a contribution changing EXISTING cast entries. From my experience, most of the time these titles get submitted without any cast list to begin with, and whoever puts whatever in is gratefully acknowledged by the other users owning this title. I don't see the absolute need for a written clarification, this section of DVD profiling gets along just fine without it. It's a perfect example of the user community silently agreeing on what's preferable without starting a ruckus at each turn. But maybe that's only happening in the music field I'm mainly interested in (Metal and Hard Rock) and the more mainstream Pop-Music Collectors are having a much harder time, that I wouldn't know about. If you must, the roles should display the instruments (including vocals), separated by commas, backing vocals qualify as a role entry as well, and the band names should be entered using dividers above the relevant musicians (especially useful for compilated programs!). | | | Lutz |

| Posted: | | | | I guess just having the individual be "himself" or "herself" is okay 99.9999% of the time. I mean, Jimi Hendrix isn't playing a role: he's just "playing" himself.
I've always submitted stuff as "himself" or "herself" and have never been turned down. |

This is my experience as well and that's true for any of the genres for which profilers are scarce. | | | ...James

| Posted: | | | | You should see the crap I submit on my kid's DVDs (Dora, Pooh, Baby Einstien). I think Skip would faint. I do the best I can, but I'm sure it doesn't live up to the high standards of the more popular titles. It's amazing the DB hasn't crashed and burned yet from such tainted data. | | | Get the CSVExport and Database Query plug-ins here. | Posted: | | | | For titles like these, I leave the role category blank, as there's really nothing that belongs there. I think "Himself" is redundant, and it's not like they're acting or playing a role. | | | "I am Andrew Ryan and I am here to ask you a question: Is a man not entitled to the sweat of his own brow?
No, says the man in Washington. It belongs to the poor. No, says the man in the Vatican. It belongs to God. No, says the man in Moscow. It belongs to everyone.
I rejected those answers. Instead, I chose something different. I chose the impossible. I chose… Rapture." |

| Posted: | | | | Himself might seem redundant, but the lack of information will seem like an omission. So I think "Himself" or "Self" is better.
It's easier to use "self".... instead of "himself" and "herself"
It's interesting to think of casting as roles. and if someone plays the guitar, he's not acting. he's performing... so, until there is a rule or proper fields for Performances, I'll go with 'self'.
(I could have gone with "Manggia Fazzulla" for all I care, since there ain't no rules... but I feel like playing nice) (xjames. Credited as 'nice') | | | |

| Posted: | | | | I would have thought for music and sport DVDs it makes more sense to use the "role" to state what they played, as opposed to who they played. For example, I have a David Bowie concert that is credited (not by me) thus:
David Bowie....Vocals Gerry Leonard......Guitar and Vocals Sterling Campbell.......Drums and Vocals
etc.
This makes more sense to me than using "himself" or "herself". |

| Posted: | | | | actually, you're right... after I posted, I started to check my concert DVDs, and it's much more informative (and it looks nicer) when it shows what they played.
But
What about foreign DVDs? For instance, I just bought a Brazilian DVD, with a local concert from a local band (as opposed to a region 4 DVD with "brazil" locality, of an American concert).
In my case, should I write "Guitar" or "Guitarra" in portuguese? I understand the logic for writing everything in English, but on the other hand, if we follow the "as credited" rule, I should write it in Portuguese.
A solution could be a menu, like for Crew, where we pick the person, and we pick the activity from a list, such as drums, guitar, bongos, whatever. It'd have to be a list one can add to, cause there are so many esoteric instruments... | | | | | | Last edited: by xjames |

It'd have to be a list one can add to, cause there are so many esoteric instruments... Actually, I would say keep it local based on the locality, not the concert. If it's a Brazilian DVD then I would have no problem with the portuguese descriptions, even if it is an American concert. If I did, I shouldn't be buying foreign DVDs! Of course, if the instruments are listed in the end credits, as they sometimes are, then of course that takes priority. And it would be nice, in theory, to have a menu like crew does, but I think the effort in re-programming compared to the actual benefits you'd get just doesn't make it worthwhile. Much easier just to type it into "role". | | | Last edited: by northbloke |
