When an UPC is not an UPC... |

| Posted: | | | | I've wondered for some time what to do if this situation arose, and today, it happened!
I got my first DVD-order from Amazon.com, and when I entered them in to DVDP, i noticed, that when I scanned the barcodes, the resulting UPC did not maych the number printed under the barcode.
It turns out, that when I scan it, it gets a zero inserted in front of the printed numbers - and only when deleting the zero, DVDP finds the correct title (it finds nothing with it).
Is this a "common" phenomenon, or is it possibly a misconfiguration of my barcode scanner?
On a side note: I ordered three DVDs - two of them were snappers. All had a sticker across the top with the title printed on the "top spine" - one had a similar sticker all the way down the side saying something about "anti theft system" - all stickers was inside the plastic wrapping. If this is common for DVDs in USA, I suddenly understand some people's bitching about it! Until todays order arrived, I have only bought R2 DVDs, and have 2 snappers out of 370 discs - and NONE of them have had stickers like that... | | | The future is here. Sometimes you're lucky and get one only, but Warner did go to town with the snappers and slap three across them. Sorry can't help on the barcode query. | | | IVS Registered: January 2, 2002 |

Regular keep cases usually have at least one but often 3 pieces of white adhesive on the edges of the case inside the cellophane as theft protection. Snappers do the same sort of thing, but with clear tape. Both types are easy to remove if you do so carefully, and slowly, without damaging the case. Theft is a huge problem in US stores - billions in losses annually! Most of the DVDs I order through the mail or over the web don't have those, however, though you will get one once in awhile. | | | John

The theft-issue isn't just an american problem - we have that here in Denmark to - and we probably would have had it with DVDs to, if they just put them on the shelves as it were... Here, we basically have two types of stores: The most common type are those that display empty cases - so if you steal it, you will get an empty case with the cover. You then give the empty case to the clerk at the register, and they go get a brand new, shiny case complete with cellophane - and NO stickers of any kind (except those put on by the manufacturers, like if the movie won an Oscar after the cover was printed). The other type of stores have the wrapped cases on the shelves with contents, but it is then jammed in to a frame, which contains the metal-strip that makes the alarms go off. The frame can only be removed with a special tool - it's kind of like "badges" they stick on clothes, if you have that over there... Second hand stores usually does things a little diffrent, by displaying the empty case, and the clerk then finds the disc in the archive and put it in... Doesn't anyone in America do anything like that? | | | The future is here. It's just not widely distributed yet. (William Gibson) |

Is this a "common" phenomenon, or is it possibly a misconfiguration of my barcode scanner? I guess that the UPC without the zero has 12 digits? The 12 digit UPC system is a subset of the 13 digit EAN system. Adding a 0 before a 12 digit UPC gives you the equivalent 13 digit EAN code. The bar code for both are actually the same. For profiler purposes, we use the form printed below the bar code. Your bar code scanner can't determine whether there are 12 or 13 digits printed below the bar code. Therefore yes this is a common problem in R2 land because we see both forms printed on covers. If you live in R1 land, I'd say it's a misconfiguration of your scanner, because for R1 releases I have mostly seen the 12 digit UPC variant. |
