| Posted: | | | | While contributing common names for linking last night, I ran into an issue with names with suffixes (Jr., Sr.) and how to list them in the name field. I chose to list such names all the same way without commas between the last name and the suffix. A user pointed out another good argument which is that the most credited name form should be used even if it includes the comma. This will cause the names to be inconsistently entered but it will be less work to enter them this way since fewer will have to be changed in order to link them.
Which way should names with suffixes be entered into the name field (the 'credited as' will obviously match the credited form): Consistently without commas Consistently with commas Use the most credited form Something else I don't care | | | ...James

| Posted: | | | | Another idea: with time a junior may become a senior for example when the former junior's son will get the suffix junior. Therefore we could leave out all those suffixes for the common name only and instead fill in the birth year. Wouldn't that be more stable over time? Just an idea. |

| Posted: | | | | Do juniors become seniors? In my own family my father was T/G/L Jr. He named his 1st son the T/G/L III.
After his father passed (T/G/L Sr.) nothing changed. He is still Jr and my brother is still III.
I thought once a Jr. always a Jr., could be wrong though |

| Posted: | | | | It has always been my experience that Sr. stays Sr., Jr. stays Jr. and from there it goes to III, IV, V and so on. This is the first I ever heard that a Jr. becomes a Sr. thing... if that is the case when the 3rd comes along... what does the original Sr. become? | | | Pete |

Never heard of this before. I am a Jr. My dad has passed away and I have no intention of ever dropping or changing the Jr. to Sr. I agree, hal. I never heard of that either. It is not uncommon in everyday usage for a Jr. to simply drop the suffix, once Sr. has passed, Lon Chaney, Jr. was frequently credited as Lon Chaney after his father died. I do this myself for every day usage, but for signatures and formal documents and settings I was given Jr. and Jr. I will always be. Skip | | | ASSUME NOTHING!!!!!! CBE, MBE, MoA and proud of it. | Posted: | | | | Right now, the votes are: 15 for consistently with commas 7 for consistently without commas 4 for the most credited form 1 for something else (but I don't see a post for what the something else would be ) 3 don't care Not too many votes, yet this becomes a big issue when you try to contribute one. So do we give victory to the comma and start contributing? Have a run off of the top 2 choices? It would be nice to link up the comma Jr.'s with the no-comma Jr.'s. We just need to agree on the format. EDIT: A new vote and a vote switch while I was posting. | | | ...James

EDIT: A new vote and a vote switch while I was posting. The poll is running for less than 20 hours. While I am anxious to get started with these things too, I think we should give it a little more time... | | | Achim [諾亞信; Ya-Shin//Nuo], a German in Taiwan. | Posted: | | | | When I was composing above, the spread was 5 between the top 2 choices. Now it's 8. Maybe some more time will allow a definitive decision to develop. | | | ...James

| Posted: | | | | give it a bit of time James At least a full day A low vote turn out does tell me people don't have an interest in the topic though. I am amazed at the TV Master / Child vote. Over 100 votes I believe. That has to be the largest vote I can remember. Obviously something people are interested in. (it's the lurkers out there.... we see you ) |

| Posted: | | | | Oh, James stop being petulant, gracious. It's a realtively small piece of data, until it slaps you in the face anyway. You are on the right track, we need a single format so we are all on the same page. Obviously as credited remains the same, but for the common name they need to be handled one way, whatever that one way is.

| Posted: | | | | While I personally voted for Consistently WITHOUT comma (in accordance with the Chicago Style Manual btw), I'm happy to do them with comma, as long as it is settled one way or the other. | | | Matthias |
