It was 46.4ºC here in Melbourne today! It was the hottest day in recorded history for Melbourne, hotter even than Black Friday in 1939.
I guess it makes a change from cold, wet and miserable!
I hope it wasn't part of a long heatwave... when you have consecutive days of heat it just seeps into everything and makes cooling even harder.

The sad aftermath of these extreme temperatures:

"The death toll from Victoria's bushfires has risen to 36 and police have now confirmed 640 homes have been lost."

More here.

The death toll is now at 49. On the plus side it's been fairly cool today, with a huge thunderstorm this morning at about 5.30 AM.

There were 47 lives lost in Victoria and 2,080 homes were burnt during Ash Wednesday fires on February 16 1983, so far in Vic. it's 84 lives and 650 homes.

The bushfires of January 13 1939, known as the ‘Black Friday’ fires caused; in Victoria; an area of almost 2 million hectares to be burnt, with 71 people losing their lives.

So in terms of lives lost these fires are the worst Australia has ever had.
In the end; Winning is the only safety.

It is hard to believe that it could happen again after all the lessons learnt from the Ash Wednesday fires.

The trouble is, we still allow fuel loads to build right up, especially in built up areas. These systems are designed to burn, but if they burn regularly the fires are far less extreme (and if done during the cooler periods they used to pre-European settlement, they burn out themselves). It makes the tragic loss of lives all the more unfortunate.
