I cannot believe this thread is still alive.  There comes a time you need to just ignore idiots and they will go away.  On that note I am out.

The point REMAINS that most people don't lug around bulky devices like laptops and Surface Pro and PREFER smaller handheld devices.  The 16, 32, or 64GB memory that most smartphones have are still paltry compared to a PC, which typically has hundreds of GB.  Try taking hundreds of photos high quality, shoot several videos in HQ, install all the apps you want, and not to mention receive emails with big attachments for a while, and you'll be out of room before long.

The point being, that most people will not edit their DB's on a smart phone (inconvenient and a pain).  You make an assumption, that we as profilers and contributors, are going to lug around the media that we are editing, while we are walking to the mall.  Or we are going to break out our portable DVD/BD player and our smartphone and edit while we are sitting in the car waiting for our spouse.  I do not see any of these happening.  Most people will edit there collection where there collection exists (typically at their residence).

So the question is, what are people actually going to do on their smartphone, mini pads, or any other ultra portable while they are away from home?

They can review their collection online, as long as they upload it to the online on any device.

They can get the mobile app addon (android or IOS) and keep their collection with them.  Yes this requires an extra step, but it takes a minute while you are at your computer.

If you want to get fancy, you can use phpdvdprofiler on your own server, and review/publish your collection online.

So, I will ask again, what are you trying to accomplish?  This is by definition a niche program.  Sooner or later, DVD/BD cataloging software will become outdated.  Eventually BD's themselves will be outdated, then this whole argument becomes moot.

I looked at you site, even as simple as it is, seems extremely lacking.  I wish you luck in your endeavor, but I think you need to reevaluate what your target audience is.  I think the audience that you are targeting here is not the right for this type of application.

Just an opinion..

To point out the obvious, DVDP needs more contributors. In order to do that, it needs more customers

I'am not sure you are right. The fact is that many users work hard on their own database, because they want correct data, so that they can use database functions of the program (linking, sorting, filtering, searching...). And when they have done this hard work, they just cannot contribute, because rules request "as on cover/screen" data, even if it is wrong and forbid to use database functions. So all those users just do not contribute. In the past, (before 2007), rules allowed correct data, and there were many contributors. At that time, when I contributed a new title in my region/country, I was hardly the first to do that. Now, many top movies are not contributed at all, and I'm not allowed to contribute my correct profiles.

As for online needs, I personally just use the possibility to verify if I have already a title in DVD or blu-ray when I'm in a place where I can buy a new one. Present online is sufficient for this purpose.

Yves, one good point in present DVDP model is that you can locally do what ever you wish. Even use imdb credits if you like. What he is suggesting would take that option away.

Optional automated online sync would be a nice feature. Every time you would implement a change to your local db, it would automatically sync changes to online collection. If network isn't awailable at that time, sync would automatically happen next time when computer is back online.

I typically lug around my iPhone, iPad and Mac (when going somewhere where I might actually need those devices; otherwise, I have my phone).  Perhaps I'm not "most" people...

Hundreds of high quality photos?  Check
Several videos shot in HQ? Check
All the apps I want?  Check (in fact I need to weed out crap I don't need)
Email? Attachments?  Check
And while you didn't mention it, my entire music collection (currently 33.5 GB)?  Check

How do I fit all that onto a 64GB phone?  Simple, I'm not a moron.  Any photos I take are typically uploaded to my Mac within a day or two at most.  My phone is for acquiring images, my iPad and Mac are used for viewing that media.  And the Mac is also used to store, organize and back that media up to an external backup drive.  Same with videos.  I'm obsessive about keeping my inbox clean.  I have no problem running out of space because everything has a place and gets put where it belongs.

I'm not against some of your ideas.  And they remind me of Ken's mythical project to upgrade our online system.  But like everyone else, I'm 100% against moving everything to the cloud.  I prefer the power that desktop apps can provide.  Cloud based stuff is getting there, but it's not there yet.  I'll take a fat client any day of the week over a thin client.  On my PC, on my Mac, on my iPad, on my iPhone, on my computers at work, etc.  Also you should know that I've been a web developer for years and years.  I make my living working with thin clients.  So I know what I'm talking about here.

I don't necessarily agree with all the stuff I've read in this thread or some of the downright hostile, rude and mean comments I've been reading.  And I think you have a few ideas that aren't too far off the mark.  But if you haven't picked up after 6 pages that your ideas might best be peddled to a different audience, then let me spell it out for you.  Very few people here are interested in your ideas.  Plus many of us have already been through similar options with DVDSpot and DVDAfficianado and other online only sites.  Most of the people who ended up here did so because they prefer a thick client.  Those who prefer a thin client found other options.  You're trying to sell a dog to an audience who fancies cats.  You should take your ideas elsewhere where you might find a more captive audience.

I agree with Mark that you absolutely have the wrong audience here.

This whole thread ( bTW ) I am in total agreement with Kathi / Martian / Addicted / and Mark  to  name a few .. ) ..,,  But this topic always reminds me Of at least someone in the past who wants to know why this Profiler Data won't play back the DVD title in type  on their screen  on their device  or laptop .......
