I can't find any information on Profile Link Submissions. The number of such submissions is counted on my profile page, which is how I found out about them, but I can find no information on which links to submit and which not to. I submitted 2 as a test, but later found out that they're on the Profile Links Page - so I assume this means that they'll be rejected? Unfortunately, there seems to be no info about these sorts of submissions in any of the "Contribution Rules" sections and a search within the program got me nowhere. Is there a rules or advice or info page for this that I'm overlooking?

This process continues to befuddle me. My first two submissions were turned down, seemingly automatically (without votes) - because I didn't know what I was doing.    My third sub, a minute mention of two versions of the film being included, went up for voting and passed after 5 or 6 days (24-0).    Next, I resubbed my cover scan for The Dark Knight Trilogy, but then assumed I screwed up by including a star and director. However, it was also passed and released, without voting, in 5 days.

Now, today, I subbed my most ambitious project yet, involving cast/crew/release info and cover scans (front and rear) for a Portuguese release of Bob Dylan's Hard To Handle. I included a plea for explanations from anyone who voted no (so I could learn) and settled in to watch the voting and learn what I could. It was approved without voting in what seemed like 5 minutes!

I'm happy, and grateful, but WTF!? Why no voting? How so fast? I can't vote because I've yet to upload my collection (still tinkering), but I thought that all subs got voted on. Then, thinking I perhaps saw a pattern, I figured that maybe images didn't get voted on. Now ... I have no clue. To quote from Tomb Raider : "My ignorance amuses me."

If there was no voting and it went in quickly, it is likely that the release was not yet in the database. In this case the screeners generally accept the new submission unless there is a glaring fault. Once the release is in the database, following contributions are voted on by the disc owners and can take the several days you saw with your other contribution.

If you submit a brand new contribution it often gets approved very quickly, sometimes automatically.

It is only when you submit changes to a profile that it comes up for voting.

The timing of profile approval varies. If, for example, you submit a contribution with a new birth year it goes through an additional step in the approval process.

Don't worry about being befuddled - it happens to even long time contributors.

The important thing is that you keep at it - contributions are always most welcome.

Also, sometimes changes are approved even with correct "no" votes. Profiler will do this as sometimes the majority of the information is right and needed (a virtually blank profile maybe?) and figures the small amount of bad info is ok as it'll be changed by the next submitter.

Also, I read this thread pretty quickly so I apologize if it's already been mentioned, but if you submit both profile and image contributions you can have them approved or denied separately even though you submitted them at the same time. So if people like your scans but you have a big error in the data part, the images can be approved but the data will be declined.

Someone did mention, I think, to not take no votes personally. While I'm sure there are a few voters out there that take pleasure is voting "no" most of my "no" votes have been legitimate. It's pretty easy to fix the wrong part and re-contribute. We've all made mistakes. It isn't hard to do. Just don't be discouraged by them!

Also, do as much or as little as you like. Every bit helps even if it's not a full contribution every time. Some people like cast and crew lists, others don't. That just means someone else will do it later. Or, if common names or BYs are too confusing, as long as what you add is directly from the credits, you'll be fine. I admit that unless it's someone I recognize as having a common name, I leave it at that. For BYs, if it's in my database, I make sure it's valid before submitting, but otherwise, don't add one. Most of the profiles I submit cast lists for don't have anything so something is better than nothing---as long as it follows the rules and is accurate to the DVD/BR it is coming from.

One thing not mentioned about why we take things directly from the disc is that there are some releases that have different information so that is one big reason why there isn't one movie/one cast or crew list. I'm thinking of a movie with Dave Chappelle in it. "Con Air?" I think. In one version he's "Dave Chappelle" the other, he's "David Chappelle" in it. By tracking how the credits are exactly, we have accurate information on that release. Yes, if you only do that, they won't link, but that's where the credited as part comes in.

Is it the easiest way to do it? Not really, but it's what we have to work with.

Ok, didn't mean to make this so long of a post. But I did want to welcome you and let you know that if you do have questions, most people here are willing to help when they can.

Thanks, guys. Your help is always appreciated. Zero defects, that's the plan. However, due to the length of time which passed while I learned and entered my own collection, I was unsure about whether this particular movie was in the larger DB or not. The only way I found out about the quick approval was when I checked back to try to edit my sub note - which apparently you can't do.

I was checking because of a dash in the title (Bob Dylan-Heartbreakers Live in Australia). If I added a dash to the title (which I could've done because I arrange all my music BD/DVD's that way in the Sort Title box only) before I knew the rules, I wanted to note that in the sub note. It's unclear because the spine shows the title as:
Bob Dylan
Heartbreakers
Live in Australia

The disc shows it that way as well, while on the front cover, Bob Dylan is at the top and
Heartbreakers
Live in Australia

is placed diagonally against the right side as if the right side is the top.

Nowhere is there a dash. Would the site have added a dash - as Bob Dylan is obviously the main title of this edition and Heartbreakers Live in Australia would appear to be a subtitle as it were?

If not, it's my mistake and one of you should sub a correction as I assume the site doesn't want folks inflating their sub counts by correcting their own mistakes. If it was my mistake, I now know enough so that it won't be repeated.

And, speaking of possible mistakes, I know Ken doesn't want any bootlegs added to the DB, which is fine. But what about movies which have no UPC (and why are UPC numbers apparently not listed anywhere with the disc info?). For example, 2 DVDs are included with the Tom Petty "Live Anthology" box set : 400 Days ("a previously unreleased documentary") (58:28) and Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers Live at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium ("a previously unreleased New Year's Eve 1978 concert") (56:56). They are packaged in CD-size heavy paper cases. Now, I am gonna add them to my personal collection, but should things like that be uploaded to the site?

Unless there is an actual dash on the front cover we do not add one. We use the colon for this. So it would be...

Bob Dylan: Heartbreakers: Live in Australia

or possibly...

Bob Dylan: Heartbreakers Live in Australia

as I really don't know much about music titles.

And yes... you can edit your contribution notes...

When you go to see the votes... just click on the title then you will see your notes as well as a link to edit your notes or withdraw your contribution all together.

You can edit your contrib. notes, but maybe only before they're approved? There's an edit button.

If it was a new contribution, there would have been nothing to compare against it. Otherwise, if you post the upc, we could take a look. Or, you could go to the actual program. Find the profile you're talking about. On the general info tab, there will be an icon of a DVD with two people on top of it. Mine is towards the bottom right of that info box. Click on it and it'll show contributions to that profile, the notes and who has done them. If you're the only one listed, it was a new profile.

Also, you can submit without an upc. It has happened that companies reuse them for different titles. You then submit it via disc id. Put the disc in your drive and if it's not in your profiler, it'll ask you if you want to add it. Or, go to add DVDs and instead of entering a UPC, you go to the 3rd tab "By Inserted Disc."

Just be careful on which ones you add. For a boxset, it can have child profiles where you need to use the disc id. But if it's a 2 disc set where it's one title, but one's a bonus dvd with just featurettes or deleted scenes, you just add the disc id to the main profile of the bonus disc. You don't make a child profile for it. However, if there were two movies on two discs, each movie would get a child profile and the main one would be the box set info with just the minimum.

Sorry, I feel like I'm making it more complicated than it really is.

LJG : Assuming you mean from within my program, on my computer, there is no "icon of a DVD with two people on top of it"

The UPC # is 7898234400375

I haven't subbed a fix yet because I don't know if anyone who saw this did (and I don't want to get in there way). Based on Addicted's info, the dash has to be my screw-up from before I understood the process or it would've been a colon at most. So I guess the dash should be changed to a colon and a space (or left as just a space). If no-one does it, I'll do it - but since I haven't uploaded my collection yet, I can't vote and the system won't show me "Unvoted Pending Updates." Finally, from what you guys say, I guess it had already been approved since I did click on the title to bring up any info. Like I said, I was surprised when I noticed that it was approved.

You're almost there. The box it is in isn't long enough. Grab the bottom and drag it down so more of it shows and that icon should be there. I circled it in red.

Well … suckcess  In the first place, I was looking in the wrong place (glad I didn't crop that picture).    Then, I pulled the general tab down but it wouldn't go further than the top of the disc icons - no little people. I tried making other things smaller, but that didn't help either. Finally, I tried moving the Overview section to the top, like yours - but I lost the General tab. However, I saw that the bar beneath that section now had two buttons - one for the Overview and one for the General.

I should've quit there, but, pressing on I somehow managed to turn off or lose the Overview tab completely - it's gone. Good news - I finally saw the little guys! Bad news, the info was totally, completely blank - even though I had updated everything with the site earlier. No-one has ever subbed anything, period.    Say, you wouldn't happen to know how I could find my lost Overview section, would ya?  Good night all ...

It's great to customize.. but can be a pain in the ass when you screw it up!  DOwnload a layout.. customize it.. but make sure you save it in case you make unwanted modifications.  You can also lock the layout to prevent unwanted changes.

This. I've messed up my layout tons of times. I eventually found one I liked and modified it a bit to my tastes and then saved it. But to get certain ones back, go to View, then Windows and there should be all the options (including overview). If it's checked and you still don't see it, check that it isn't combined with anything. I've done that before.

Here's a quick link to layouts. I use a modified version of Greil1. But I like 5 Rows Widescreen and Rod's Layout, if that's any help. Mainly I use that modified version though. Gets most everything on the screen accessible but not too cluttered.

Bob Dylan-Heartbreakers Live in Australia
is an unofficial, unauthorized Brazilian bootleg/pirate disc of the 1986 HBO TV broadcast. The only "real" (official) releases are an o/p CBS/Sony lasedisc and an o/p CBS/Fox VHS, both released in 1986.
Does it qualify for entry into the main db? Don't konow or care....no horse in this race.
