Speaking of which, IMDB just celebrated their 18th birthday.... Not too bad for a disasterous website..

The fact is that IMDb has become the most interesting database for movies. I fully understand Ken when he wants dvdprofiler not be accused to copy IMDb, but it was not a reason for users to spit at this site after having used it for years. And even Ken has kept a direct link between a dvdprofiler profile and an IMDb profile in the online menu.

No  one would if they had an accuracy andvalue... theire accracy is noon0existent and as such calls into question their value for anything related to movies or TV. I used to agree with you, surfeur, until I actually started doing data from the ONLY real source for it and discovered just how big a train wreck they were and whhat that meant for anything IMDb. Their users are completely out of control and they have made very few attempts to change it. I would n't trust them for ANYTHING as a sole source for information, ANYTHING I find at IMDb I try and find at least one more INDEPENDENT source for the data.

I would never presume that any one source is perfect and can do everything for everyone; this can not be possible. Personally, I use IMDB quite often because it drives me crazy if I can't remember something. For example, if I want to know what movies a particular actor has been in I go to IMDB. With DVDP, if I don't own the movie I can't access that information. I seldom use IMDB in regards to DVDP (and never as a single source of course) but I find that it comes in handy for other things. Sooo...here's one person that likes IMDB!

I like it too  It's not a perfect database, but no database are (even the one here). I use it mostly when I want to know what movies someone I like had done in his/her career. When I'm in a bad mood I always go read the movies forum and I laught so much that my smile returns for the day

That's why I use IMDb, too.  And it has thing like plot synopses and plot key words that help me decide whether or not I want to get/watch a particular film.

I also use it as a stepping off point for analyzing TV series credits (Cast as crew isn't broken down by episode).  Of course I verify the data by watching the whole credits, but IMDb data is a start.

As someone who has had my rookie contributions rejected for using IMDb data, and now having read many of the threads here, I can understand the value of Skips rules.  But, at the same time, there are many DVDs here that have IMDb data incorporated that were never caught because the contributor simply didn't say their info came from IMDb.  It's not just old data from the older DVDPro versions.

Just check out the new Get Smart movie (UPC 883929-039241 and 883929-047369).  On one, the Producers/ExecProducers are listed in the same alphabetical order as IMDb, not the way they're done on the film credits.  On both, Leonard Stern (ExecProducer from the TV series) is credited as "Cesna Pilot" on IMDb and here on DVDPro – Cessna is not spelled "Cesna", except on IMDb.

I too, love IMDb, but will no longer use it for any contributions here.  But there are obviously some who do and still slip through.

Perhaps there could be a "New Users Start Here" page or something to steer new users away from these most common mistakes.  I used DVDPro for months before registering, and now my personal database is filled with "corrections" I now wish I had never made.  The sheer amount of information on this website can be daunting, and has taken me weeks to find some of the things I needed to know.  Something like the one-page "How to set up your new TV/computer" inserts you get with new electronic goodies.

My Thanks to everyone here for their contributions to this awesome program.
I kept it all in a spreadsheet before...

And the reason for this particular rule is to help protect Ken and Gerri from liability (IMDB/Amazon being notoriously litigious).  So it's their rule in both the sense that they wrote it and they directly benefit from it.

You've got to remember to that the rules do state, "If an actor is credited by name but does not have an associated role, you may use another source to identify the role. In each case, list Actor’s names and roles (when given) exactly as they are in the credits and in exactly the same order credited. " That being the case most users copy the credits from the movie itself and any missing credit roles get looked up using 3rd party databases, which is within the rules, just so there are no holes in the credits. I've personally done this in the past, but I've always try to catch any misspellings or capitalization errors before submitting, so it doesn't need changing later.

Thanks for the replies.  I know the rules aren't "Skip's Rules", but if one reads many of the threads here, there are quite a few (who don't seem to care for Skip) who often refer to them as such...

Another Ken, I haven't submitted a correction.  After 8 of 9 submissions declined, I'm going to take a deep breath, wait for version 3.5, and try again then.

Now, a big Mea Culpa is in order...  After a long day of cutting and chopping more Ike-damaged trees, my kids and I watched our new Get Smart DVD last nite, and in the end credits, "Cessna Pilot" is actually spelled "Cesna Pilot".  Still incorrect, but it's in the credits.  To quote Max, "Son of a Hamster!", I "missed it by that much."

Final thought: What are some sources for credits that aren't IMDb?  Where do contributors find the (uncredited) actors, etc.  I have hundreds of older films of the type that only listed principal actors, many times without roles.  Like many others here, I am extremely interested in high-quality data, and will eagerly contribute accurate corrections/additions from "legal" sources if you'll kindly point me in the right direction.

Mike

3.5 was released a few hours ago - Download here.

As for sources for uncredited actors, then the best (and really only place) is from the film itself. For example, if you see actor X in a film and he isn't credited then add him as uncredited and give the time that he appears.

Edit: As Addicted2DVD says, official sites for the actor are also accepted.

I have added some Uncredited Cast by listening to Commentary Tracks and watching other extras on the disc. I have also found such info online in stuff like Official actor sites... interviews with actors. Stuff like that... basically coming from someone in the know. Other then that I personally wouldn't add Uncredited Cast.

When I encounter an uncredited actor whom I recognized myself, I add them and list the timecode of his/hers appearance in the contribution notes.
