Eh, if I'm looking for anime I don't want to have to wade through Disney titles.  I like keeping them separate.

Me two ... so I don't buy Disneys!
No, seriously I would create a Tag "Anime" for my purposes, thus making myself more work, but all for the sake of a clear database.
"Anime" is kind of redundant as it is simple "Animation from Japan" for us Gaijins, and as such shouldn't be a false Genre.

BTW: The Animation could be read as "Cell-Animation" which would call for an additional "CGI-Animation" Spec. And you ould distinguish between "full animated" (Snow White, Appleseed) or "part" (Pete's Dragon, Dragonheart).
Allthough there could (and would) be discussion where a SpecialFX turns to "Part Animation"

I've said it's a can of worms.

This whole discussion only adds up to one point. We are never gonna agree on what is what. Therefore I would like Ken to make genres dissaper from the online DB. It doesn't belong there, because this is a ping-pong element.
I will give you an example:
Resident Evil and Resident Evil: Apocalypse is based on the games with the same name. Now I am a huge fan of these games aswell as the movies. And here comes the point. The games are Horror and so are the movies. But in my region (R2, Norwegian) they are listed as Sci-fi. And this is bloddy wrong, as the rules says. And I tried to change this, but it got declined: Yes: 0  No: 1. Clearly this got declined because of the one no vote. So what are we gonna do, when a genre is bloody wrong? And this is just an example. I can list many more.
As a result of this, I have locked all my genres in my local Db. And that was the the last time I am trying to correct a genre in the online Db.

One I havent seen mentioned............

Exploitation

Some of those films cant really be put into any other genre, except possibly horror.  Although most of them dont realyl fit into horror either.  They are made to shock disgust, but not necessarily to scare.....

Is this something like gore/splatter movies? Like Bad Taste?

It can include films like that, but it's not exclusive, exploitation films can also include a lot of sex and crime. So films like "Vigilante" and most of Russ Meyer's films are included as well as stuff like "Blood Feast" etc.
From Wikipedia:
Quote:

Exploitation films is a loosely defined term to describe a film genre that typically sacrifice the traditional notions of artistic merit for a more sensationalistic display, often featuring excessive sex, violence, and gore.

I have also seen anime used to describe what little animation that comes out of Korea and other Asian nations as well.  But anime to me is animation from Asia, esp. Japan that should be its own genre.

How about nunspoitation?

I definitely agree about adding Mystery and Crime, and taking away Classic.

I'd also like to see Noir, but I cringe at the thought some people might put Noir, Crime and Suspense/Thriller in the genre fields, when the first necessarily entails the others.

Good idea of adding new genres, though, it'll help the database. (without, hopefully, causing too many problems...  )

I have to agree that dropping genres from the online database is probably the best way to go. But even then we need a lot of new genres or a whole new system (the 3-step system i read somewhere on here looked good) so we'll be able to use genres locally in a useful way. Currently I've got to rely on tags for this but those aren't available in the statistics ... wow, that's a good idea, add tags to statistics :D

Local only genres can be easily implemented using tags. I would not care about genres at all, if they were local only. Whereas I can accept most genre settings, which I have downloaded from the online database.

I do have a nunsploitation tag in my collection; it's been a while since I checked how many were under it though.....over 70 if I recall.  The book Anticristo is invaluable for ferreting out these naughty nun titles.

I have a tag just for Christmas movies and shows.

Isn't everything that is rated "G" also considered "Family" genre?

I would not draw that conclusion. Many movies are rated G but of no interest for "older people" and mainly intended for the kids. For me a Family movie must have a certain value for the grown ups as well...

I would like to see the Genre tag able to be user controlled/created. That way you can have what YOU want. Failing that amount of flexibility, I would like to at least be able to create ONE category for myself. eg I have a lot of Railway DVD's and at the moment they are listed under Special Interests.
