As we all who read "Contribution Discussion" forum can see, new forum rules update didn't change anything, as I expected. Atmosphere is as hostile and negative it was before. How about a REAL change Ken?

If someone is acting in such a way that the result is they are banned, then their behavior is having an impact on the forum community. It is important then that those affected know that some action is being taken.

Overall, I agree, but I've been thinking...

I don't remember who, but someone said that publicizing the bans could also help other (especially new) users to see exactly what you should not do, unless you wanted to get banned. Well, how? That would require the moderators to not remove the post, and I'm not sure I would like that...

Anger and resentment can build up if there is no visible way to see that action is actually being enforced. If someone is banned it should be made public to the community.

As I said, I'm not sure it should be - at least not every time!

I myself am one of three moderators on a forum for an organistation. The moderators can only issue bans up to a weeks duration, and only if at least two of the three moderators agree on it. They do not need to announce the ban. If the moderators feel the user should be banned for more than a week, they submit the case to the board, which can then issue bans up to a year - these bans are made public.

Transferring that to this forum, I could easily live with it if only bans for a week or longer went public...

The benefit to open and pubic discipline is two fold. It will  demonstrate to those affected by negative behavior that action has been taken. It might also act as a deterrent to those whose behavior is unacceptable to the community.

Pubic discipline??? I'm not sure I want to go there...

I think we need two separate forums:
One for those who want to and try to follow the contribution rules and
one for those who want to bend the contribution rules to theirs likes.
We don't need stinkin' IMDB's errors, we make our own.

That was me who said that, and, yeah, it would require the mods not to remove the post. If you (general) are going to act like a child and say derogatory things or belittle others in public, I personally don't have a problem with the post being kept for others to see how not to act on a particular forum.

I (again, personally) don't think much is gained from deleting an entire post, as if someone comes late to the game or someone is banned because of what they said, people can look and see what was said and where the lines are.

I keep reading the argument (or debate) that bannings/suspensions should be kept quiet and I don't agree with it. I'm not talking about the reasons for the banning/suspension (if the posts are left, they would speak for themselves), but a note under the person's name is sufficient. It tells the other forum members that action is and will be taken on those who make for a negative forum. I'm not advocating for a thread saying X has been suspended and why, simply a "Banned" or "Suspended" under the name. I could not care less for the reasons, because 99.9% of the time, people can figure them out for themselves, anyway.

We could use the same technique as with spoilers.

Hide the comment from general view, but allow people to see what was said if they wish to know.

However, any response to a "hidden" post would be forbidden on threat of moderator action.

That is an excellent idea Hal.

Amazon actually does that or something similar. After a certain number of people have rated a post down, it goes to "hidden" status in which a viewer can choose to view the post that was found offensive.  At least I think that's how it works.
